Stylish, high-quality leather
Spacious main compartment
Bulky when fully packed
Pricier than an average duffel
The world of travel has two types of jet-setters: those who pack for space efficiency and those who pack for style. The classic, vintage-inspired Komal's Passion Leather 21-Inch Leather Duffel is a must-have for the latter. Made with naturally tanned goat leather that’s designed to get better with age, the TSA-approved travel bag is high-quality and visually appealing.
Inside, the canvas-lined weekender is also surprisingly roomy. Travelers can fit numerous outfits plus toiletries and accessories—but should they? I tested the top-rated duffel bag to see if it’s worth buying, filling, and hauling all over the world. Read on to find out whether or not it’s right for you.
Design: Spacious with subpar organization
While this suitcase can fit clothes for a weekend or longer, the limited number of pockets make it tough to stay organized. The bag’s one external pocket is more for vanity than functionality; while it could fit a smartphone, the semi-secure buckle lock makes it better for less valuable items like pens or a small notebook. The two full-height side zipper pockets are among the bag’s most functional features. You can store shoes, toiletries, blow dryers, or dirty clothes in these roomy pockets.
The vintage aesthetic with naturally tanned goat leather makes it worth every penny for the style-focused traveler.
Inside, the spacious main compartment is lined with durable canvas. I found it surprising just how much I could fit if I packed strategically. The small interior pocket is perfect for accessories like watches or jewelry, but it’s too small to really help with organization, so I ended up not using it.
With a padded shoulder strap that adjusts by buckle, I felt most comfortable wearing the bag across my body. That said, if you decide to remove the strap, the two leather handles felt durable enough to support the duffel at its full capacity. Whether or not it was comfortable to carry with the handles—or the straps—is another story.
Portability: Best for a road trip or train travel
This bag is a TSA-approved carry-on size; it measures 21-inches long, 11-inches tall, and 11-inches wide and fits in most overhead airplane compartments. That said, the genuine leather shell makes this bag heavy. Unfilled, it weighs 4 pounds; when filled to the brim, it can reach 10 to 15 pounds (or more, depending on what you pack).
I found it surprising just how much I could fit if I packed strategically.
Lugging a 10-pound bag through the airport can get pretty uncomfortable. That’s why this bag isn’t necessarily the best for air travel; it’s better for road trips—where you don’t have to deal with the bag once it’s in the trunk—or train rides, as long as the trip doesn’t require multiple connections and walking.
Some of this bag’s best uses go beyond travel. With a vintage-style exterior, the duffel can be used as a sleek gym bag that can pairs perfectly with workday attire. The roomy main compartment fits exercise gear and workout clothes, and the exterior side pockets are ideal for shoes or dirty, post-workout clothing.
Quality: Handmade with high-quality leather
While this duffel may be lacking in functionality and organization, the vintage aesthetic with naturally tanned goat leather makes it worth every penny for the style-focused traveler.
The bag’s quality was tangible from the second I received it. The bag arrived in a protective cloth case with straps and zippers wrapped for protection. It is smooth to the touch and smells like it’s straight from a Florentine leather store. The sturdy brass buckles add an attractive vintage touch.
I love that this duffel is totally gender-neutral. I carried it with a black bomber jacket and jeans and felt much more fashionable than usual while traveling.
Price: A bag that lasts a lifetime
At around $85, the Komal's Passion Leather weekender is pricier than the average duffel, but then again, most duffels don’t have the classic leather style that makes this one stand out.
It's better for road trips—where you don’t have to deal with the bag once it’s in the trunk.
Competition: The prettiest, most practical option
Tom & Clovers 22 Inch Square Leather Duffel Bag: With an almost identical build, the Tom & Clovers duffel is a less expensive alternative to the bag I reviewed. Small differences include the Tom & Clovers’ size—it’s one inch longer than the KPL—and the bag’s side zippers, which lack the vintage, faded look of the KPL bag’s zippers.
KomalC Genuine Leather Duffel: While this KomalC duffel comes at a higher price tag, it offers smaller organizational pockets that mine is missing. The KomalC bag has two small external zipper pockets, an internal small zipper pocket, and several small compartments for pens and a smartphone. That said, the KomalC has just one main compartment; it lacks the KPL’s two larger side pockets.
The bags have a few relatively unnoticeable differences—the KomalC bag is made of buffalo instead of goat leather, for example. But without the two side compartments, the KomalC goes down a notch in my book, making the KPL a more affordable and equally functional option.
