Inside Atlanta: King of Pop’s Steven Carse

King of Pops’ Co-founder shares his favorite spots in Atlanta

We're back with our series Inside Atlanta—each week, we sit down with influential locals to talk about what Atlanta means to them. Today we’re chatting with Steven Carse, co-founder of King of Pops. He’s a prime example of a resilient Atlantan, bouncing back from a layoff the best way possible: developing delicious frozen pops in his kitchen. Eventually he teamed up with his brother to create King of Pops. The company is now a fixture at festivals, concerts and events – and one of Atlanta’s best frozen treats.

Today we get a tour of The Big Peach led by Carse himself.

I live in… “Old Fourth Ward, close to Poncey Highlands. I feel connected with it. I’ve been there for 10 years and I like the community. I know the people and there’s plenty of stuff to do.”

I Wish People Knew…  “Atlanta is a place that if you come without knowing someone, you’re going to have a different experience than if you visit someone. People here are friendly, though, especially for a big city.”

You Can Find Me… “where people want to be in the city for King of Pops – so, everywhere. I bounce between the Ponce City Market location and the window on the BeltLine.”

It’s Dinner Time, I’m Headed to… “Dish Dive. I love the food, and the vibe doesn’t feel like a place that’s trying to take advantage of you. There’s new stuff all the time, and it’s BYOB”

Clock Strikes 5’oclock, I’m Drinking…Sister Louisa’s Church of the Living Room on an early weeknight, before it gets crazy. I love to play ping-pong, and I love the community there. If I want a good cocktail I go to The Lawrence.”

If I had to Stay in a Hotel, I’d Check Into… “it’s not open yet, but I’m really excited about the new Cleremont Hotel. It’s going to be really cool because it’ll be a nice hotel with a piece of Atlanta history.”

Atlanta’s Best Kept Secret is… “The park by Freedom Center – it has the most amazing amount of fireflies during the summer.”

When I’m Playing Tourist I go to… “Paris on Ponce. It’s a nice antithesis to Ponce City Market, and 8Arm is there which I think is going to be really successful.”

I Get My Sweat On… “I love to run around Old Fourth Ward, and I like yoga – especially King of Pops yoga.”

I Love Spending My Money at… “local restaurants. Whether it’s a new restaurant, celebratory or ‘just because’. I like Kimball House, and Staplehouse is fine dining but you can sit at the bar.”
