Kicksledding in Montreal

The sport—think dog sledding but without dogs—has been around for more than a century in Scandinavian countries, but kicksleds, called trottinettes des neiges in French, have only recently crossed the ocean, with but a half-a-handful of Montreal parks renting them out alongside skates, cross-country skis and snowshoes since roughly 2007.

These "winter bicycles" function like a child's scooter, offering a reportedly effective aerobic exercise, an activity poised to spread as winter sports enthusiasts discover the trend along with families on the lookout for new forms of winter fun to amuse tiny tots as well as senior members of the clan. Kicksleds work on compacted snow or ice and dogs can be leashed to them.

Contact information for Montreal's network of large parks is available here. Contact information for rental outlets below is available by clicking on park names.
