Inside Atlanta: Kate Atwood, Executive Director, Choose ATL

We're back with our series Inside Atlanta—each week, we sit down with influential locals to talk about what Atlanta means to them. Today we’re chatting with Kate Atwood, executive director of Choose ATL, an initiative of the Metro Atlanta Chamber to attract and retain top talent in the city—as well as showcase its many perks, from park space and the BeltLine to restaurants and a booming startup scene.

Atwood, who lost her mother at 12 to breast cancer, also founded Kate’s Club, a non-profit based in Atlanta that offers support to children and teens who have lost a parent or sibling. Today we get a tour of The Big Peach lead by Atwood herself.

I live in… “Poncey-Highlands. I love being right in the heart of the city, but still feeling like I have my own little neighborhood.”

I Wish People Knew… “just how culturally vibrant Atlanta is. We have a legendary music scene, diverse food scene and a communal sense of pride, where people genuinely care about each other and the city. It’s time the world knows this story. Through my work with Choose ATL, I am charged with doing just that, breaking through misperceptions and sharing the story of what makes Atlanta unique, inviting, and quite frankly the best place to call home.”

You Can Find Me… “on the BeltLine, and all around it. It’s amazing that now I make so many of my decisions based on what I can walk to and access near the BeltLine.”

It’s Dinner Time, I’m headed to… “one of the many great restaurants around Ponce City Market, Inman Park and Edgewood. I love the new spots like Staplehouse, Bartaco and Krog Street Market. But, I also have my treasures like Bantam Pub, Wrecking Bar, and Bookhouse Pub. Atlanta’s food scene is so amazing that it's hard to narrow it down to just one great place.

Clearly, I love to be out, and eating.”

Clock strikes 5 o’clock, I’m drinking… “I’m drinking…Malbec. It’s my evening go-to.”

If I Had to Stay in a Hotel, I’d check into… “The Loews in Midtown or the W Atlanta Downtown. The Loews is in a great location and I love the live music there. It has also been so supportive of the nonprofit I founded, Kate’s Club, hosting our Annual Kate’s Club Gala for the past five years. But I also love the boutique feeling of the W Atlanta Downtown. I'm also very curious and excited about the new Clermont Hotel coming soon.”

Atlanta’s Best Kept Secret Is… “itself. However, we’re trying to change that with Choose ATL by showcasing the kaleidoscope of lifestyle and culture which is unparalleled to any city experiencing the growth we are today.”

When I’m Playing Tourist, I go to… “the local parks, live music venues and I am a huge fan of the High Museum. I invite friends to attend events at the Woodruff Arts Center with me as often as I can.”

I Get My Sweat On… “by walking around the neighborhood with my pup Josie. You can get a great workout outside in Atlanta. I also do Flywheel a lot. It is my go-to indoor workout.”

I Love Spending My Money… Urban Cottage in Virginia Highlands for gifts for others, and treats for my home.

But more than anything, I love spending money on travel. I love Atlanta, but I also love how easy it is to get away. We are so lucky to have our airport and all the routes it offers.”
