Kansas City straddles the border between Kansas and Missouri, but gay travelers typically head to the LGBT-friendliest quarters in the Midtown-Westport neighborhoods. This laid-back but cosmopolitan Midwestern city supports a thriving nightlife; the official Visit KC website invites LGBT visitors to come discover a club from the mix of "lesbian to leather, cosmopolitan to country western, drag to dance" scenes that keep revelers out until the wee hours.

Private Men's Clubs

You won't find men's bathhouses or saunas in Kansas City  (the state's only gay bathhouse, Club St. Louis, is located several hours by car to the east), but one option comes close to this kind of a scene, albeit on a small private scale. Hyde's Guesthouse differs from typical gay accommodations and gyms in several ways. The facility, which the owners describe as a "period Arts and Crafts boardinghouse," is located in a semi-residential neighborhood near Midtown. It's a private club, with memberships by referral, so you must contact Hyde's by phone to apply. Upon acceptance, you find out the address. Walk-ins are not accepted, nor can you make reservations via e-mail or text message, so call in advance if you're interested.

Hyde's includes both a small gym and guest rooms; you must rent either a room or a locker. The facility does not include a sauna or steam room, so any sexual activity takes place in the rooms of guests.

The antique-filled rooms range in price from $79 to $100 per night, with two guests only permitted per room.

Bars for Cruising

Short of heading to Hyde's for a hookup or meeting guys on the usual apps, one of the many gay bars located around town offers your best bet in Kansas City for meeting men on the make.

In Union Hill, not far from Hyde's, the Side Street Bar makes a good option for meeting fairly cruise-y dudes, especially those with a leaning toward bears, leather, and such. In warm weather, you can mingle and exchange vitals while seated on the covered patio area out back.

Another of the city's gay bars with an especially strong following among single guys looking for companionship is Buddies on Main Street, a low-key men's bar in Midtown celebrating 25 years in business in 2018. Right next door, the long-running and well-frequented country-western gay club, Sidekicks Saloon, generates less of a pick-up vibe than Buddies but still makes for a fun spot to spend an evening.

For more of a nightclub experience, check out the dance floor, drag shows, karaoke, and cabaret at Missie B's, located on the edge of the trendy Westport neighborhood close to the West 39th Street restaurant row. The place gets packed on the weekends with fun-seekers of all ages, collegiate to mature. The long-running drag shows draw both gay and straight fans; nightly happy hours offer rotating drink specials. The Kansas City Pioneers gather upstairs, where you can also find a leather shop.
