If you'd love to visit a top-rated winery, eat in a great restaurant and stay in a charming inn - and do all that at one place, don't look toward Napa. You won't find it there. Instead, go to Paso Robles' Justin Winery.
My Justin Experience
There's more to visiting Justin Winery than the pleasurable consumption of some great vintages. I'm here to tell you about the whole "Justin Experience." It's a three-part story. Let's start with the wine.
Justin, the Winery
Justin is one of Paso Robles' oldest and most respected wineries, making a range of red and white wines, with a focus on red wine blends. And wow, what a lineup! I've been visiting California wineries for over a decade and Justin is one of only three where I enjoyed every wine poured. [The others were Jarvis and Raymond].
The winery tasting room's big windows look out into the vineyards. Outside, their shaded patio is perfect for relaxing. If you have lunch or brunch in the restaurant, tasting is complimentary.
They also offer a winery tour (by reservation) that's interesting and informative. It all stacks up to make Justin one of my top winery experiences in Paso Robles.
The on site restaurant serves lunch and dinner. Reservations required for dinner - and you should make them as far ahead of time as possible. It's also a good idea to reserve for lunch before you make the long drive out of town and find them filled up. You can do that by calling 805-591-3224 or on Open Table from their website.
Dinner at Justin is a leisurely meal, with 5 courses served over about 3 hours. Service is attentive and friendly. With plenty of space between the tables, you can enjoy your own conversations without overhearing what everyone else is saying. Service is top notch and the chefs participate in serving some of the dishes. Overall, our meal at Justin ranks among the top dozen I've enjoyed in over 15 years of California writing and dining.
A perfect ending to the Justin wine and dining experience is a stay at JUST Inn, just a few steps from the tasting room and restaurant.
I stayed at JUST Inn in early 2014, a few months after a major renovation, staying in the Justification Suite. The rooms are beautiful and the views even more so. My Handsome Honey especially liked the separated sleeping area, which let him go to sleep early while this night owl stayed up reading.
Overall, the experience was A+ all the way. In the interest of presenting all the facts, it's well worth the cost, but may be too expensive for some budgets. And if you're planning on spending a lot of time in and around downtown Paso Robles, it's a half hour's drive from there.
