Jet Boat Ride in Hells Canyon of the Snake River

Hells Canyon of the Snake River

Linda GarrisonĀ

Hells Canyon on the Snake River is the deepest gorge in North America. The Snake River rushes through the canyon at depths ranging from only 2 feet to over 100 feet deep.

Passengers on small river ships sailing the Columbia and Snake Rivers of the Pacific Northwest ride jet boats from Clarkston upstream about 80 miles into the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. The boat is covered, the ride is not rough, and it is lots of fun for everyone. The jet boats stop twice on the excursion. The first stop is at a lovely ranch for a hot lunch, and the second is at peaceful Cache Creek Ranch for a break. The ride back downstream goes much quicker, but those riding in the back of the jet boats might get wet from the spray.

The jet boats pass through rugged canyon scenery, and the contrast between the rolling river and the sheer cliffs towering overhead is breathtaking. Every bend of the river promises a new sight, whether it be wildlife, fishermen, or a historic mine.

A ride in a jet boat up the Snake River from Clarkston provides views of magnificent rocky mountains and class 1 and 2 rapids.

Our jet boat adventure stopped for a hot lunch at a lovely ranch on the bank of the Snake River. While at the ranch, we spotted these wild turkeys. They didn't seem to be worried that Thanksgiving was scheduled in just a couple of months.

On our jet boat adventure into Hells Canyon, we stopped at a ranch for a hot lunch. The owners had porta-potties installed in their barn. Imagine our surprise when we saw the bar was occupied by this buck deer, who coincidentally was bedded down by a John Deere tractor. Great photo op!

If you look closely, you can see an American flag flying atop this mountain. A local resident changes out the flag periodically as it becomes damaged from the wind and weather. Quite a hike up to the top, isn't it? The next photo shows the large flag more clearly.
