James Raia

James Raia is a reporter, editor, columnist, author, homeowner and long-distance runner who has lived and worked in Sacramento and written about the city and surrounding areas since 1976.


After a 10-year tenure as a staff writer and columnist for daily newspapers, James has been a freelance contributor to newspapers, news agencies, magazines and websites — Associated Press to the New York Times, Runner's World to USA Today — since 1987.

Sports writing, travel and human interest assignments have taken James to more than 20 countries. He has reported on the Winter Olympics to the Tour de France — and interviewed a vast cross-section of athletes. He also contributes feature, travel and lifestyle articles newspapers, magazines and online publications.

James is co-author of the book Tour de France For Dummies and he has written the syndicated car review column The Weekly Driver since 2003.
