Jacksonville ranks among the more conservative larger cities in Florida, and it's also less of a gay-resort destination than you'll find in the state's southern regions - places like Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Key West, all of which have at least one quite popular gay bathhouse and in some cases some cruise-y resorts of gay beaches. Still, in this rangy metropolis of nearly 850,000, there are plenty of gay men looking for action, and the city does have one venue that's a good bet for hooking up.

A reliable gay bathhouse with a loyal following of regulars, Club Jacksonville (1939 Hendricks Ave., 904-398-7451) is in the city's historic San Marco neighborhood, across the St. John River from Riverside and downtown, where most of the city's gay nightspots are located - it's a short drive, though. This is your standard bathhouse, having served the community since 1974. It's not especially fancy, but the management did give the place a thorough refurbishment in recent years, and they work hard to keep it clean and pleasant.

The city also has several very fun GLBT bars and hangouts - have a look at the Jacksonville Gay Bars Guide for specifics. Among those bars listed, New Boot Rack Saloon is likely the one that draws the randiest bunch of guys, so you might consider it your top pick if your goal is to have some fun (and especially if your taste tends toward guys in leather, bears, and others with a bit of an edge.

You'll also find one beach in the area with a fairly notable gay and cruise-y following, at Guana Tolomato Reserve, which lies between Jacksonville and St. Augustine and is home to many thousands of acres of pristine wetlands, dunes, and sandy beaches. At the Ponte Verda Beach section, which you can access from Hwy.

A1A at Guana River Road, you'll find the area of towering dunes that has a particularly pronounced gay following (you get there by following the boardwalk from the parking area).
