TripSavvy's editorial guidelines Updated on 01/29/19 benedek / Getty Images Jacksonville, located in Northeast Florida, is situated along the banks of the St. Johns River, about 25 miles (40.23 km) south of the Florida-Georgia state line, with its beach reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Because of its location, some 340 miles (547.18 km) north of Miami, temperatures will be somewhat lower throughout the year. Jacksonville has an overall average high temperature of just 79 F and low of 59 F. On average Jacksonville's warmest month is July and January is the average coolest month. The maximum average rainfall usually falls in September. Of course, weather is unpredictable so you may experience higher or lower temperatures or more rainfall than the average. If you're wondering what to pack during your Jacksonville visit, shorts and sandals will keep you comfortable in the summer, but a sweater may be necessary if you'll be out and about on the water in the evening. You will definitely need warmer clothes throughout the winter months. Dressing in layers is the way to stay comfortable as your day and evening temperatures may fluctuate several degrees. Of course, don't forget your bathing suit. Many hotels have heated swimming pools; and, although the Atlantic Ocean can get a bit chilly in the winter, sunbathing is not out of the question on sunny days. While Jacksonville has not been affected by a hurricane in recent years, it is important to know how to prepare if you're traveling during hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November 30. It's important to inquire when you are booking your stay whether there is a hurricane guarantee. Looking for more specific weather information?
