Northern Europeans Flock to Ibiza for Sunny Shores and Party Atmosphere

Ibiza is the southernmost island of the Balearic Islands of Spain. Ibiza's year-round population of 73,000 grows to much more than that during the busy summer season when vacationers from northern Europe come to Ibiza for fun and sun. Ibiza is seen by many as a playground for jet setting party seekers, and a visit to the island confirms this reputation. The island is also home to many artists, so strolling the narrow streets and visiting the artisan's shops can be interesting and rewarding.

We visited Ibiza from the Wind Surf sailing ship and spent the day enjoying the city of Ibiza. Our ship was docked until well after midnight, and those who stayed out late said that the party-goers were arriving in the bars and the city was just starting to wake up when we sailed!

The lovely Lady Moura sails from the harbor at Ibiza. The Dalt Vila (old town Ibiza) towers over the harbor.

The Lady Moura yacht sails away from Ibiza. Ibiza is famous as a playground of the rich and famous, and this yacht, with its onboard helicopter certainly fits the image. At 344 feet, the Lady Moura was the 10th largest yacht in the world in 2005, according to Power & Motoryacht Magazine. Built in 1990, the Lady Moura is owned by Nasser al-Rashid, a Saudi multi-millionaire who is a University of Texas alumnus. The Lady Moura is larger than many small cruise ships, and carries four tenders, two stowed in each of her aft side bays. The decktop helicopter costs around $25 million, and the dining table is 59 feet long.

Although the Lady Moura returned to Ibiza later in the day, we didn't get asked onboard. Wouldn't you love to sit at that 59-foot table with many of the rich and famous?

This obelisk, which honors the pirates who defended Ibiza from enemy attcks in the 18th century, is used as a waypoint for directions in Ibiza.

The Homenaje a los Corsarios, a statue to pay homage to pirates, is erected right on Ibiza's harbour, facing the port.

Pirates played an important role on Ibiza from the 18th Century onwards, as they defended the island from enemy attacks by sea. The 1925 monument was paid for by the people of Ibiza. Many maps and Ibiza guides start a walking tour of Ibiza town at the obelisk.
