Review: Hyatt Place New York Midtown South

Find it at the intersection of Value and Location

For budget-minded families, finding a hotel in New York City that's both kid-friendly and affordable is the Holy Grail. Affordability is, of course, relative in a city where the average daily room rate hovers around $300 a night, so it's wise to prioritize value over price. Instead of focusing on what you pay, focus on what you get for your money.

On a recent visit to Manhattan, I turned to a chain known for delivering an array of generous benefits and found that, despite its rather unwieldy name, the Hyatt Place New York Midtown-South is just the ticket for a family stay in the big city.

For starters, it's hard to beat the location on 36th Street (between Fifth and Sixth aves) in midtown Manhattan, within walking distance of the Empire State Building and Times Square, as well as Macy's and scores of boutiques.

Next, the hotel's average daily rate typically comes in between to $200 and $250—considerably below the city's $300-a-night average—though your rate will depend a lot on your travel dates. If your plans are solid and you are comfortable with the no-cancellation policy. you can save 10 percent by paying the advance rate.

But it's the list of free amenities that really make Hyatt Place a home run for families. There's a complimentary and extensive hot-and-cold buffet breakfast available every morning (for which you'd easily pay $20 per person elsewhere), free wi-fi, and an on-site fitness center. If you want to check email or print out boarding passes, there are several computer terminals and a printer in the lobby also available for free use. All told, these complimentary amenities add real value to the tune of at least $100 a night.

Best rooms: Rooms are generously sized by New York City standards. Many, but not all, feature a sofa bed—a boon for traveling families. Each room also has a flatscreen TV, desk, and a mini refrigerator. Ask for a room on a top floor if you want a view.

Best season: The city that never sleeps is an all-season destination. This Hyatt Place has a location that makes it a good bet any time of year.
