How to Travel from New York City to Miami by Train, Bus, Car, and Plane

Miami’s warmth, beaches, nightlife, and palm trees are 1,282 miles south of New York City. To get from New York City to Miami, there are several transportation options. You should consider the pros and cons of each option before deciding which mode of transportation is right for you—but generally most people fly since it is a long distance and flying takes the least amount of time (about three hours). Because it's such a popular route, you can sometimes find good deals, especially during the off-season. Buses might be more affordable, but the trip is extremely long (at least 30 hours) and there are transfers involved. The train trip is also quite long, and fairly pricey—but if you’re looking to see the sights of the South and experience a sleeper car, this could be the time. Driving takes about 18 hours, depending on traffic. If you plan to drive, be sure to take into account the cost of gas and tolls, food along the way, and probably a night in a hotel.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From New York City to Miami?

Flying to and from Miami is the fastest and most convenient way to travel. It is also sometimes the cheapest option, depending on the season, the day of the week, and if you buy in advance or last minute. The flight takes about three hours, but that does not include time spent getting to and from the airport, checking bags, or clearing security. All of the major carriers (including JetBlue, Delta, United, and American Airlines) as well as budget carriers (Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines) service the route, with one-way fares as low as $49. However, tickets can cost well over $100. Miami International Airport is the closest and most convenient airport to downtown Miami (it’s just 8 miles away), while Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is 20 miles away. Palm Beach International Airport is 62 miles north and also an option.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

You can drive to and from Miami, which can make for a pretty epic East Coast/Southern road trip. The most direct route is about 1,282 miles, taking you south along I-95 through New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and most of Florida. Obviously on a drive this long—at least 18 hours—you’re bound to hit various rush hours and traffic along the way. Plan on at least two days of travel time, though you may want to turn it into a road trip and stop more often. Visitors to New York City can rent cars in Manhattan, although rates at the airports tend to be cheaper.

While this trip is quite long, the biggest advantage to traveling via car is that it can save you quite a bit if you are traveling with a group of people. Plus, there is no schedule to stick to and this route can make for a fun road trip, with plenty of fascinating places to stop along the way. Besides car rentals and gas, remember to add tolls, meals, and at least one night's stay at a hotel into your budget.

How Long Is the Train Ride?

Traveling by train to and from Miami and New York City is a long trip. Trains go from Penn Station in Manhattan to Miami Amtrak Station a bit north of the city. The route is serviced by Amtrak, via the Silver Meteor and Silver Star train lines, of which Miami is the southern terminus. The trip is about 27 to 30 hours, with stops in Washington, D.C., Charleston, Savannah, Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa. One-way tickets range from $130 for a seat to upwards of $479 for a sleeper car. Many find train travel romantic, and if sleeping overnight in a sleeper car is on your bucket list, this ride all the way down the East Coast might be the trip for you.

Is There a Bus That Goes From New York City to Miami?

Bus service to and from New York City and Miami is extremely long and sometimes not any cheaper than a flight, with one-way tickets starting at $103. Trips can take more than 30 hours, arriving one or even two days later. There are usually one or two transfers as well as long stops in many cities (from 30 minutes to one hour and 45 minutes). There are no sleeper options, only regular seats, making this a long, uncomfortable ride that is not recommended. Greyhound is the only company that services this route and buses depart from Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan.

Can I Use Public Transportation to Travel From the Airport?

You can get to downtown Miami from the airport via the MetroMover or public bus. Or, take a shuttle, taxi, ride-hailing service like Uber or Lyft, or rent a car.

What Is There to Do in Miami?

Miami is one of the United States’ great beach cities, with a lauded nightlife scene to match. You must see South Beach and the rest of Miami Beach (on a barrier island) to experience Miami in all its glory. Be sure to admire the area’s many preserved Art Deco buildings, many of which are hotels today. Stop by Wynwood to see its famous wall murals and Little Havana for a taste of Cuba in the U.S. Bring your dancing shoes, have a thirst for tropical cocktails, and be ready to eat everything from Cuban food to sushi and seafood.
