How Do I Register to Vote?

Are you a Milwaukee resident interested in voting, but you still need to register? No problem. There are two ways to do this: in person on Election Day (in 2016 Election Day is on Tuesday, Nov. 8), or in advance. Note: if your planning to register in advance of an election that's expected to have high voter turnout, it is highly recommended that you register in advance. This will save you time.

How to Register in Advance of Election Day

You can register by mail or at any Milwaukee Public Library branch up to 20 days prior to the election you wish to vote in (or the third Wednesday before each election). You may still register to vote at City Hall within the 20 days before an election, or at your voting site on Election Day. Voter registration forms are available at any Milwaukee Public Library or by mailing in the voter registration application from the Election Commission's website.

How to Register on Election Day

To register at your polling place on election day, you must bring proof that you have lived at your present location for at least 28 days preceding the election. Acceptable proof includes:

  • A current and valid Wisconsin driver's license.
  • A current and valid Wisconsin identification card.
  • Any other official identification card or license issued by a Wisconsin governmental body or unit.
  • Any identification card issued by an employer in the normal course of business and bearing a photo of the card holder. Business cards are NOT accepted.
  • A real estate tax bill or receipt for the current year or the year preceding the date of the election.
  • A residential lease which is effective for a period that includes election day.
  • A university, college or technical institute identification card with photo, along with a fee payment receipt issued to the cardholder by the university, college, or technical college dated no earlier than nine months before the date of the election at which the receipt is presented.
  • A gas, electric or telephone service statement (utility bill) issued within 90 days of the election day.
  • A bank statement.
  • A paycheck.
  • A check or other document issued by a unit of government.

These items are only acceptable registration documents if they they state your:

  • current and complete name, including both the given and family name.
  • contain an account, document or identification number.
  • current and complete residential address, including a numbered street address, if any, and the name of a municipality.

Also note that forms with an expiration date must be valid on Election Day.
