Although one of the largest cities in the country, and one with a huge population of gay men, Houston only has one gay bathhouse: Club Houston.
Located close to downtown hotels and restaurants, and about a 10-minute drive east of the city's Montrose gay nightlife district, this Houston staple has been serving the gay community of southern Texas for over 10 years.
Whether you're just looking to spend a day at the spa or want to find a male companion while on your vacation to Houston, a trip to Club Houston is the only destination in the city offering a safe space for gay men to gather, soak in the sauna, and enjoy one another's company in private.
The Only Gay Bathhouse in Houston
Although Houston was once home to two gay bathhouses, Midtowne Spa—which also has branches in Denver, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Milwaukee—closed in 2016 due to financial troubles, leaving Club Houston as the only gay bathhouse in the city.
Club Houston is an impressive space whose amenities include a state-of-the-art gym, steam room, dry sauna, outdoor heated pool, and sundeck—all in a clean, modern facility. While the club is somewhat more upscale than competitors, rates are in line with other gays spas and bathhouses in the region, starting at $25 for lockers and $30 for regular rooms (prices include a one-time $10 membership).
Club Houston also offers a number of daily specials including half-priced rooms on Tuesdays from 4 to 11:45 p.m. and Fridays from 4 to 7:45 p.m., half-priced locker rentals on Wednesday evenings, and reduced-price locker rentals on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Legacy Clinic also comes by on Wednesdays and Fridays for HIV and syphilis testing while Hax comes by on Tuesdays for full std screening.
Other Gay Destinations in Houston
Although Club Houston may be your only option in the city to experience a bathhouse on your vacation, that doesn't mean the city doesn't have plenty of other gay nightlife destinations, especially in the Montrose district.
For a quick bite before or after your trip to Club Houston, consider stopping by Barnaby's Cafe, a Montrose neighborhood staple that serves American food with global cuisine influences. Alternatively, you could stop by Baba Yega Cafe, a diner-style eatery with vegetarian and carnivorous options, which has been open since 1975. While the Sunday brunch here is especially popular, dishes ranging from vegan "hippie" meatloaf to fresh ceviche make the menu here enjoyable no matter what time of day you visit.
If you'd rather get your dance on when visiting Houston, there are also a number of gay and gay-friendly clubs and bars located in and around the Montrose gay district. JR's Bar and Grill (which also has locations in Dallas and D.C.) has been a staple of the community for decades, featuring multiple bars and events like karaoke and drag shows almost every night of the week.
If you are looking for another sex club or bathhouse, you may have to travel to Dallas, Orlando, Columbus, Fort Lauderdale, Indianapolis, and St. Louis instead—all of which have their own gay scenes and communities to explore and discover on your vacation.
