The flight to Athens, Greece can be long, especially for visitors from the U.S. Here are some hotels which are near the Athens International Airport and which have either been recommended by readers or I've had experience with them directly.
The Sofitel at the Athens Airport is a 4-star hotel located at the airport. It can't be beaten for convenience, though its exterior architecture is dreary and the room rates are not cheap.
The rooms themselves are reported to be memorably luxurious, according to one experienced traveler.
Another choice is the Holiday Inn at the Athens Airport. While it is a free 5-minute shuttle ride away, it's closer than most of the other choices and offers a comfortable haven for the tired traveler for less than the Sofitel, but still, expect to pay about $150 at the desk. You may want to try booking on-line on your way.
Armonia Hotel. Stated to be "the closest hotel to the new airport" before the Sofitel opened, it's about a half hour trip. It's located near the healing waters of Lake Vouliagmeni. Its sister hotel, not far away, is the Hotel Paradise.
Peri's Hotel and Apartments provides a free shuttle to its location in Artemis, about ten minutes away from Athens International Airport. Rates include a continental breakfast and free Wi-Fi. It can be booked directly or through the Pacific Travel office at the airport, which can be found just after you exit baggage claim.
In Rafina, the Hotel Avra is under new management and has been recently renovated and upgraded. It's convenient to the hydrofoils and ferries leaving Rafina, and it's about a 30-minute trip from the airport.
The Astir Palace Hotels are deluxe, expensive, but provide an indulgent retreat. It's a waste for just one night - if you do book here, stay for several and enjoy exploring Attica.
These upscale hotels are also located in Vouliagmeni.
This is a small (72-room) hotel in Vouliagmeni, near the famous lake, located about a half an hour from the airport. Bonus: it claims to offer room service until 2 am, a lifesaver after a long, late flight, but I'd call ahead to make sure if you're arriving late.
Hotel Mare Nostrum
Situated in Vravrona, a pretty area about a half an hour from the airport. This hotel has been repeatedly recommended as a good value. If you stay there, try to squeeze in a visit to the lovely temple of Artemis located nearby.
If you haven't planned in advance, you can book through one of the travel desks at the airport on your arrival. I've gotten good rates through the travel agencies at the airport, even at crowded times of year. If you are going to your hotel by public transportation or taxi, they are very careful to give you good directions, including writing them down for your bus or taxi driver, and an estimate of taxi charges if needed.
Time estimates between the airport and the hotels are as reported or experienced, should be considered to be approximate, and may vary substantially depending on traffic conditions. If you've had a good stay at a hotel near the airport, let me know and I'll include it in this list.
