Horseback riding is an activity that many people may not live in the Midwest think of when they think of states like Kansas and Missouri, but when it comes to major metropolitan area like Kansas City, you’re more likely to find fine dining and free concerts rather than horse stable.
However, there are several places surrounding Kansas City that offer trail rides and horseback riding to city dwellers who want to get out and experience country life for a while.
The following are some of the places that offer rides for horse enthusiasts that don’t have one of their own.
Show-Me Trail Ride Outfitter
Address: 20111 Goodlow Orchard Rd., Lexington, MO
Distance From Downtown Kansas City: 57 minutes; approximately 54 miles
This business offers group and single person rides with a variety of options, including campfires, and all-day adventure with lunch provided, and 1 to 3 hour ride around Lexington Missouri. Reservations are required. Rides are available year-round.
Wild Rose Equine Center
Address: 17105 Old Pike, Rd., Dearborn, MO
Distance From Downtown Kansas City: 37 minutes; approximately 32 miles
This center offers scenic one-hour guided rides for writers of any level of experience, including kids rides are currently $40 per person and require a reservation.
Large party reservations are available.
Lone Wolf Ranch
Address: 22801 State Line Rd., Cleveland, MO
Distance From Downtown Kansas City: 39 minutes; approximately 35 miles
This option is south of Kansas City, near Stilwell and north of Louisburg, Kansas.
Rides are offered usually on the weekends, but weekday rides can also be accommodated. The cost is $40 per rider for group rides, or $50 per rider per hour for private ride. Rides must be scheduled with the 24 hour notice and a minimum of two riders is required, with a maximum of 10 riders.

Distance From Downtown Kansas City: 28 minutes; approximately 18 miles.
The Heartland Center offers horseback riding for writers with little to average experience. The ride given varies and will depend on the overall average experience of the group. Writers must be at least 10 years old and reservations are required at least two weeks in advance. There is a minimum of eight riders and a maximum of 15 riders per group for an hour ride. Cost is $25 per rider.
Saddle Creek Stables
Address: 5915 S Norfleet Rd., Kansas City, MO
Distance From Downtown Kansas City: 17 minutes; approximately 12 miles
Saddle Creek Stables is the closest location to downtown Kansas City and offers trail rides, hayrides, and pony rides. Hayrides are $200 per hour for up to 30 people and trail rides are $40 per hour per person or groups of 1 to 8 people.
