Native Americans are invited to participate in this annual competition. Hoop dancers compete in age groups (5 and under, youth, teen adult and senior) for cash prizes. Men and women compete head-to-head. Tribes from across North America are represented.

The hoop represents the circle of life to Native people, and hoop dancing is often a part of Native American ceremonies. You can see hoop dancers at various festivals and events around the Greater Phoenix area, such as the Pueblo Grande Museum Indian Market in Phoenix and Native Trails in Scottsdale.

While those are exhibition dances, the hoop dancers at the Heard Museum World Championship Hoop Dance Contest not only perform to share their culture with guests, but they are in it to win it! Dancers are judged on a slate of five skills: precision, timing/rhythm, showmanship, creativity and speed. Some of the seasoned dancers will use up to 50 hoops in their performance.
