It's getting easier to shop for organic and local foods. The St. Louis area now has a growing number of health food stores catering to shoppers who want minimally processed and pesticide free items.

Many stores also have gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian foods as well. Here are some top recommendations for where to buy organic and locally grown foods. For more options, check out St. Louis' Best Farmer's Markets.

Golden Grocer Natural Foods

335 North Euclid, St. Louis
Golden Grocer is a neighborhood market in the Central West End. It's been selling specialty food and nutritional supplements since the 1970's. The market has an organic produce section with basics like apples, tomatoes and potatoes. The shelves are also stocked with organic varieties of cereal, snacks, pasta and more. There is also a nice selection of Amy's frozen meals, along with vegan and gluten-free items.

Local Harvest Grocery

3108 Morganford, St. Louis
As the name indicates, Local Harvest Grocery is all about selling locally produced items. The owners of the store have a mission to sell as much food as they can from farms located within 150 miles of St. Louis. That means shoppers can enjoy fresh goat cheese from Baetje Farms, meats from Missouri Grass Fed Beef and a good variety of other items. Local Harvest Grocery also has grocery store essentials like bread, eggs, milk and coffee, along with a nice selection of craft beer and local wine.

The Natural Way

8110 Big Bend, Webster Groves
12345 Olive Boulevard, Creve Coeur
468 Old Smizer Mill Road, Fenton

The first Natural Way food store opened more than 40 years ago in Webster Groves. All of the shops offer a unique selection of organic and locally made products. In addition to the basics, Natural Way has snacks, honey, peanut butter and cooking essentials.

There’s also a produce section, frozen foods and specialty items for those with food allergies. In addition, the Natural Way is a good place to find herbal remedies, handmade soaps and nutritional supplements.

River City Natural Food Market

833 South Kirkwood Road, Kirkwood
River City Market has been in business in Kirkwood for more than 30 years. The store has a wide variety of natural and organic foods like pastas, canned goods and sauces, but it does not stock fresh produce. The staff is also very knowledgable about vitamins and supplements. River City Market offers coupons and monthly sales as well.

Whole Foods

1601 South Brentwood, Brentwood
1160 Town and Country Crossing Drive, Town and Country

For the biggest selection of organic and natural foods under one roof, Whole Foods is the place to go. Whole Foods offers organic and natural varieties of nearly all the food available in a traditional grocery store. The store also sells wine, gourmet cheese and a variety of prepared foods.

Eckert's Orchards County Store

951 South Green Mount Road, Belleville
It isn't hard to sell farm fresh produce when it grows right outside the door. Eckert's Country Store in Belleville always has a selection of seasonal produce just picked from the fields.

From strawberries and peaches, to apples and pumpkins shoppers can find fresh fruit and veggies throughout the year. The Country Store also sells fresh baked bread, meat, cheeses and more.
