If you're willing to go a little farther afield in search of a good scare, check out some of the haunted houses in Genesee, Hillsdale, Ingham, Livingston, Monroe, St. Clair, and Washtenaw Counties. While some of the haunted houses and attractions in Metro Detroit are truly horrifying, the outlying counties take advantage of the lonely country side to scare up some truly spectacular frights.
- Genesee County / Burton: The Crypt Haunted House
The Crypt Haunted House is open on weekends in October starting on Friday October 2nd. It is also open October 25th, 29th, 30th and Halloween. General admission is $15 a person.
- Genesee County / Capac: Salem's Haunted Village
Salem's Haunted Village is closed for the 2015 season. The website states it will return in 2016, “bigger and better.”
- Genesee County / Grand Blanc Township: Saint Lucifer's Haunted Asylum at Playland Park
In addition to the Haunted Asylum, there is a second attraction called 13 Feet Under, and new this year, Zombie Paintball. The attraction is open weekends from September 18th through October 31st, and November 7th, as well as Thursday nights in October. The Asylum tickets cost $18 ($28 VIP), while the 13 Feet Under attraction costs $18 ($28). Zombie Paintball is $10. There is also a combo ticket that, depending on the day of the week, runs $30 to $50.
- Genesee County / Mt. Morris: Exit 13 Haunted House
The attraction's “Grand Opening” in 2015 is Friday, September 18th, and the website states it has been completely renovated. It is open on weekends until October 2nd, then includes Thursdays. It is also open on October 30th, 31st, and November 1st. Tickets are $18 a person. VIP Fast Passes are $28 per person.
- Hillsdale County / Jonesville: DarkSyde Acres
In addition to The Dark Abyss (a haunted, land-locked pirate ship), DarkSyde Acres has six other haunted attractions, including the Rusthole (a black-out maze), Catacombs (zombie filled), Labyrinth (outdoor maze), Hayride (family friendly), and Zombie Massacre (a paintball challenge).
DarkSyde is open on September 19th, 25th, 26th, as well as every weekend in October. It is also open on October 30th and Halloween. Individual and combo tickets are available and range in price from $7 to $30.
The attraction has Hollywood-type special effects, covers 38 acres and has over 70,000 square feet of interior space. The plan is for DarkSyde to eventually have 14 attractions.
- Ingham County / Webberville: Trail of Terror at Best Corn Maze
The Trail of Terror comes complete with animatronics, a black hole / vortex tunnel and clown area – cause, let's face it, clowns are scary! New for 2015: Zombie Ward and Pharoah’s Curse! It costs $20 a person and opens Friday, September 11th, weekends through November 1st. Note: cash only
- Livingston County / Pinckney: Terrorfied Forest & Manor
The haunted happenings on 30 acres in Pinckney take place on the site of the former Michigan State Sanitarium. The attraction includes a scary 40-minute walk through the woods ($20), as well as the Terrorfied Manor ($10). Bubble’s Funhouse, an indoor horror attraction, is included.
A combo ticket costs $25 for both attractions. The attractions run on weekends from September 11th through October 31st.
- Washtenaw County / Chelsea: Krazy Hilda's Trail of Terrors
This attraction is open weekends starting September 25th through October 25th, located at 10340 Ford Road in Ypsilanti.
- Washtenaw County / Milan: Talladay Farms Haunted Maze
In addition to other fall fun, Talladay has a haunted maze that starts on Friday, October 2nd and runs on Friday and Saturday nights through October 25th. Cost is $7 an adult.
- Washtenaw County / Ypsilanti: Night Terrors at Wiard's Orchards
Night Terrors has six attractions covering 89 acres, including the Ultimate Haunted Barn, the Asylum, The Labyrinth Haunted Maze, Alien Caged Clowns (a type of circus side show), The Mined Shaft, and Hayride of the Lost (w/free cider and donuts), and Splattertown, a live-action haunted paintball experience.
Night Terrors is open on weekends from September 25th through November 1st, and includes Sundays starting October 11th. It is also open on October 30th, and Halloween! Tickets cost $18.99 for one attraction, $49.99 for a six-attraction package.
