The Charlotte airport serves as a hub for US Airways and offers flights from nine other carriers.   • By Car: Here is a list of driving directions to Charlotte Douglas International Airport from various points around the Charlotte area.
  • By Public Transportation: Charlotte's bus system, CATS, provides transportation from the main bus terminal Uptown to Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Fares as of October 2008 are $1.50 per ride with weekly and monthly passes available. At this time here is no LYNX light rail service to the airport, but you can take the light rail's blue line to the main bus terminal.
  • Taxi or Airport Shuttle: While you can take a taxi to the airport a better bet is an airport shuttle service. 
Getting to Charlotte Douglas International Airport isn't always as easy as you'd think. Just several miles west of Uptown, Charlotte Douglas is accessible by all the major highways in town. Here are basic directions.

From I-85

Take Exit 33 to Billy Graham Parkway and travel approximately one and a half miles, exiting on Josh Birmingham Parkway at the sign denoting the Airport.

From Uptown Charlotte

Take I-277 to I-77 South, take Exit 6B to Billy Graham Parkway and travel approximately five miles, exiting after the second traffic light at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport exit. Availability of airport parking will be indicated on signs along Josh Birmingham Parkway.

From I-77

Take Exit 6B to Billy Graham Parkway and travel approximately five miles, exiting after the second traffic light at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport exit. Availability of airport parking will be indicated on signs along Josh Birmingham Parkway.

From I-485

Take the Wilkinson Blvd./Highway 74 exit and travel approximately 1 1/2 miles on Highway 74 East. Turn right at the Wilkinson Blvd./Little Rock Road stoplight intersection. You will then pass the airport's Long Term Parking Lots. Next, turn left onto Old Dowd Road and follow the signs to the airport terminal.

Compared to most major city's airports, Charlotte airport parking is some of the most reasonably-priced and convenient parking for airports in the nation that I've come across. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is busy, but the parking lots and complimentary shuttle service make the experience rather painless.

Here is a look at the variety of parking options when visiting the Charlotte airport:

  • Hourly Parking
    Best option for dropping off or picking up travelers. Not ideal when flying out of town for any extended period as this is the priciest lot.
    Rate: Free for the first 30 minutes; and $1 per 30 minutes with a maximum daily rate of $16.
  • Daily Parking
    Ideal for a short out-of-town trip.
    Rate: $1 per hour with a maximum daily rate of $6.
  • Remote
    Ideal for a short out-of-town trip.
    Rate: $1 per hour with a maximum daily rate of $6.
  • Long-Term
    Ideal for any length trip. The long-term parking lots are the Charlotte airport's least-expensive parking lots.
    Rate: $4 per 24-hour period.
  • Curbside Valet
    Ideal if you're running late or just simply do not want the hassle of parking your vehicle and taking a shuttle bus to the terminals.
    Rate: $4 for the first 30 minutes, $1 for each additional hour with a maximum daily rate of $19.
  • Business Valet
    Ideal if you're running late or just simply do not want the hassle of parking your vehicle and taking a shuttle bus to the terminals.
    Rate: $4 for the first 30 minutes, $1 for each additional 30 minutes with a maximum daily rate of $10.
  • Cell Phone Lot
    This is the best solution for picking up your passenger from Charlotte's airport as you won't waste time or fuel circling the terminals. The Cell Phone Lot allows you to wait in your vehicle and ask your passenger to contact you via cell phone when they claim their luggage, then drive to the baggage claim area to pick them up.
  • Overflow Parking
    Open only when all lots are closed - special one time rate.
    Rate: $10 flat fee
