The Best Guesthouses in Hong Kong

Staying at a guest house in Hong Kong is a great way to save money, but if you are afraid of bugs, it can also be an excellent way to get scared out of your wits. Luckily, many guest houses in Hong Kong have scared away the cockroaches, started washing the bedding and turned on the air con. Below, you’ll find our top picks for a guesthouse stay, including three entries at the infamous Chungking Mansions and Mirador Mansions and even a property on Hong Kong Island.

It’s worth noting that all the pictures below come from the guesthouse websites, so both the accuracy and quality may be questionable. The reviews are, of course, independent.

Cosmic Guest House

The Rolls Royce of guesthouses when it comes to amenities, Cosmic’s rooms come loaded with extras including cable connected tv, wifi, and showers in every room. Some of the rooms have been renovated with a few pieces of furniture thrown in as eye candy, although they’re so small you may end up sleeping with your luggage. The tiny shower space is surely a Guinness World Record holder. They also have 4-bed dorms. If you’ve booked Cosmic, be sure you aren’t grabbed by touts from another guesthouse claiming to be from Cosmic, who will then lead you to their own property.

Alisan Guest House

Alisan regularly receives good reviews from travelers, and with twenty years of history behind them, they must be doing something right. The location in Causeway Bay makes it one of the few decent guesthouses on Hong Kong Island and the prices reflect that, although they’re very fair considering the neighborhood. The small rooms look a little like an office, with white walls and panel ceilings, but are clean and well equipped, including TVs and private showers. They also claim that reception is manned twenty-four hours.

New Peking Guest House

The big draw at New Peking is the prices, which amount to little more than a pocket full of change, unfortunately, luxuries are equally sparse. Incredibly small rooms, full of chrome fittings and pale tiles look, a little worryingly, like the set from One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. At least the asylum staff keep the place sparkling clean and most rooms are ensuite. There is no real reception here, so guests have to make do with letting themselves in and out.

Star Guest House

Star Guest House is a good bet for first-timers as it means you don’t need to brave either of the Mansion blocks. You do need to be careful which room you pick at Star, as there is a myriad on offer, from little more than cupboards with a bed to doubles with free internet connection and a Queen sized mattress. It’s also worth noting that the smallest singles and doubles don’t feature an ensuite bathroom, although all other rooms do. They also run the Lee Garden Guest House which offers a better quality and consistency of room. You’ll find details of both on their website.

Chungking House

One of the more upmarket guest houses in Chungking Mansions, Chungking House has rooms that are vast by Hong Kong standards, meaning you can at least turn around without elbowing a hole in the wall. The rooms have been recently renovated, (apparently all of them) and are comfortably above standard, with pine furniture and reading lights. They also come with TVs and private bathrooms. The guesthouse is also on a reasonably low level of Chungking Mansions, meaning if you do need to tackle the infamous stairs, it won’t be too far a climb.
