The economy wasn’t at its greatest in 2009 when Chef Jonathon Sawyer* and his wife Amelia opened The Greenhouse Tavern in Cleveland, Ohio, but that didn’t stop the couple from bringing this fresh and friendly concept eatery to their hometown. It turned out the risk well worth taking as the restaurant has become known as one of the city’s best.
Making use of local products, even including meats and grains, is the backbone of The Greenhouse Tavern, which still manages to keep prices reasonable and creativity at the forefront of the menus.
The most popular items on The Greenhouse Tavern menu are not ones you’d normally picture being served in the same place. Pommes Frites (French fries) with garlic, rosemary and an aioli gravy is a great start, but leave room for more especially the burgers and sandwiches.
The Pulled Barbecue Mushroom, with coleslaw and Carolina barbecue sauce, is out of this world. Try it with cheddar if you aren’t going for the vegan. Meat lovers will be amazed at the Ohio Lamb Burger and Crispy Chicken Sandwich. If you are looking for something more adventurous at this Cleveland restaurant, there’s always the hand ground Filet of Beef Tartar.
A Brunch menu was also recently introduced at the restaurant. It includes some unusual items such as a Buttermilk Whey Waffle, with pistachio ice cream, chocolate, and whipped cream, and an Animal Style Ohio Potato Hash that’s made from bacon, fried eggs, mozzarella cheese curd and whole grain mustard.
Accolades and Awards
Patrons aren’t the only ones singing the praise of The Greenhouse Tavern in Cleveland, Ohio. Restaurant Hospitality Magazine named the Pulled Barbecue Mushroom on its “Best Sandwiches in America” list in the Vegetarian category (2015). That same year the magazine also gave The Greenhouse Tavern Spicy Chicken Sandwich second place in the “Best Chicken Sandwich” category.
No Problems for Special Diets
One of the reasons The Greenhouse Tavern has become so popular is that it's very accommodating. The websitestarts with this mantra for the restaurant:

That phrase doesn’t just sound good, it definitely rings true. All the food in this restaurant is organic and GMO-free and everyone – from the kitchen to the table – is aware of how to handle special diet needs and allergies. All you have to do is ask and they will make sure the food is cooked for your special needs.
The bar menu receives almost as much attention as the food menu at Cleveland’s Greenhouse Tavern. The bar team was brought in to make sure there was a great selection of spirts, beer, and wine, including a sherry on tap. They have also created some crafty cocktails, such as a Pineapple Chili Margarita.
During Happy Hour, you can come into The Tavern for drinks as low as $2, and special offerings like Chef Sawyer's Pickleback, a shot of Overholt Rye with pickle juice and a Black Label Beer. Food specials are also available during the daily Happy Hour, from light salads to their popular Pomme Frites.
The Greenhouse Tavern is located at 2038 East 4th Street in Cleveland, Ohio. East 4th Street has become somewhat of a destination in Cleveland for restaurants and entertainment. It’s also where Michael Symon’s Lola is located.
