Astoria, Oregon, Celebrates ’80s Cult Classic with Goonies Day

Astoria, Oregon, served as the filming location for the cult classic ’80s film The Goonies. The coastal city now celebrates with Goonies Day on June 7th every year -- the day the film was originally released.

The Goonies tells the story of a group of kids who need to quickly raise funds to prevent their families' displacement for the construction of a new golf course. When they discover a map leading to One-Eyed Willy's hidden treasure, they set off on adventure.

Goonies Day is actually a multi-day affair, stretching from Friday, June 6th, through Sunday, June 8th, with daily treasure hunts, screenings of The Goonies film, discounted zip lining, trivia events and even some "Truffle Shuffle fan gatherings." The Truffle Shuffle is a belly shake made famous by Chunk, a character in the film, and fans are encouraged to let loose.

On Saturday the Goonies house, a private residence, is open for self-guided tours with pre-reserved tickets. On Sunday retired Oregon state park ranger Patrick Lines discusses his experiences working with the cast and crew back in 1984 on location at Ecola State Park. The free presentation takes place at the Cannon Beach History Center at 1:00 p.m.

30th Anniversary in 2015 & Goonies 2?

June 7, 2015, will mark the 30th anniversary of The Goonies, so start planning ahead. Many members of the cast -- which includes Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton -- joined the celebration of the 25th anniversary in 2010, and plans are already underfoot for a big shindig for number 30.

Steven Spielberg, who served as executive producer of the original film and helped to craft some of the story, has been linked to a rumored sequel, The Goonies 2. Now's the time to brush up on your knowledge of the original.
