Civil War Reenactments – Gettysburg

Remembering the Battle of Gettysburg

© Gettysburg Convention and Visitors Bureau

Each July, Gettysburg commemorates the anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg with three days of Civil War reenactments. The events will be held just three miles from downtown Gettysburg, on the beautiful Yingling Farm, filming site for the Civil War movie, “Gettysburg.” The re-enactment site borders the western edge of Gettysburg National Military Park and overlooks the historic Sachs Covered Bridge which was used by both armies. The site also offers a panoramic view of the Eisenhower Farm as well as Big and Little Round Top. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania is located just 84 miles north of Washington DC and makes a great getaway destination.
The Battle of Gettysburg was the largest battle ever fought in North America with around 165,000 troops taking part and resulting in the largest number of casualties in the Civil War. Confederate General Robert E. Lee moved north in the summer of 1863 to engage Major General Gordon Meade’s Army of the Potomac and destroy it, but failed to do so at Gettysburg. This defeat is often described as the “turning point” of the war and the final battle of Pickett’s Charge is remembered as the “high tide” of the Confederacy.<br/>For information on Gettysburg attractions, tours, annual events and travel resources, see A Visitors Guide to Gettysburg, PA
