The name Gertrude Zachary is part of a number of ventures in Albuquerque, to include a jewelry line and several jewelry stores, a castle that can be rented for parties and weddings, and an antique store downtown. The antique store is housed in an art deco building that greets visitors with stylized tiles inlaid into a pattern of a cowboy on a horse and art deco patterns in bright colors. Inside, the long building contains many rooms, each filled with eclectic furniture that is not only vintage and antique, but also beautiful.
Much of it is decorative, but much is useful as well. Every inch of every room is stuffed with objects you'd consider taking home and using to make your place a more resplendent palace.
Even if you're not an antique shopper, you can still enjoy shopping at this store. There are large pieces of furniture such as beds, couches, dining room tables complete with sets of chairs. There are small pieces of furniture that take you back to when end tables were given a lot of thought. There are pictures, fountains, knick knacks and settees. There are many periods of time and tastes reflected in what's available. And whether or not you're shopping for something, it's always fun to browse.
One of the best parts of visiting Gertrude Zachary Antiques is making your way all the way to the back, where a large metal door opens out to the back patio, where a gardener's paradise awaits. There are fountains both large and small, mini waterfalls, and water spitting gargoyles.
There are metal arbors, cement benches, urns that can be turned into fountains, or used as decorative pots for plants. There is something for every gardener looking for something special to populate the home garden, and you'll have fun looking for it in the eclectic hodgepodge of the outdoor area.
The antiques have been collected for over 50 years by none other than Gertrude Zachary herself.
She bought at some of the largest auction houses in Europe, as well as throughout New Mexico, Texas, Mississippi and Mexico. Zachary lived until she was 75, and passed away in 2013. Her businesses continue to thrive, having been continued by her daughters.
