The Garrison Golf Club, Garrison, NY

The Garrison Golf Club, Garrison, NY, like Radisson Greens, is another of those old-world, 18-hole, par 72 championship layouts that are always a delight to play. The golf course is set high on a bluff some 800 feet above the Hudson River and offers breathtaking views over the Hudson Highlands. The Garrison Golf Course was designed by one of the masters of mid-20th century, Dick Wilson (a personal favorite of mine), and opened for play in 1961. Dick was determined to take full advantage of this dramatic, rolling terrain; the result is a challenging and rugged highlands golf course, a seemingly remote layout, secluded, relaxing and testy. The front nine is all about shot-making: tight fairways and landing areas, heavily forested with dramatic elevation changes, tough tee shots - some with forced carries over deep ravines - hillside lies and tight approaches into challenging greens. The back nine is a little more forgiving, the landing areas a little more open, but the greens are just as challenging. The course plays a little over 6,400 yards of golf from the tips for a par of 72 with a course rating of 71.3 and a slope of 130.

The Garrison Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 72 championship golf course. The layout is perched some 800 feet above the Hudson River - the views are the rugged Hudson Highlands terrain as its backdrop, are stunning. I often ponder the thought that few courses in the country are favored with as lovely a setting the Garrison. Dick Wilson made full use of what was on offer and put together a challenging highlands course, characterized by a varied topography with woodsy, rolling hills, many elevation changes, tough tee shots over deep ravines, side hill lies and challenging greens. "True to Wilson’s intention and the sporting tradition of golf, we keep a natural looking and well maintained golf course. We encourage the presence of birds and wildlife and pursue our commitment to a cleaner and safer environment through certification in the Audubon International program."
