If you’re seeking a Memphis-area outpost for French Country furniture and accessories, First Fruit Collection on Collierville’s historic town square is the place for you. French Country, at least First Fruit’s version of it, means weathered wood finishes, fabrics and accessories with natural, rustic elements, and a soft, homey color palette that reflects the vibrancy of the rural French countryside.
Owner and designer Ashley Toney bought the store in 2012, bringing an updated, on-trend and millennial-friendly flair to the longtime shop. Today, head here for Pinterest-ready art, pillows, furniture, seasonal décor and a wide range of home accessories. Toney’s interest in French Country design came from growing up with a mother who loved the style, and she brings her own take to the shop with a fresh color palette that changes subtly with the seasons and the trends.
First Fruit Collection offers a varied array of merchandise and services. Find a rundown here:
In its 5,000-square-foot showroom on the east side of the Collierville square, First Fruit Collection carries lines including Habersham, French Heritage, C.R. Laine, Highland House, Hooker, Schnadig, ROWE, Southern Furniture, Thibaut and more.
First Fruit keeps a rotating selection of art by local artists on its walls and shelves, featuring artists such as Sherrill French of The French Palette, Vesela Baker and Katie Toombs, as well as handmade art and accessories by Emily McKinney and hand-crafted, distressed picture frames by Colleen Long. All artwork in the shop fits with the rustic, time-worn and French-inspired aesthetic that permeates the space.
Along with the furniture, art and accessories in its retail space, First Fruit Collection offers interior design services, with designers on staff who can help on- or off-site with furniture and art selection, space planning, accessorizing and more. The shop also employs a floral designer and carries silk and dried floral arrangements – available ready-made or by custom order.
This full-service shop also custom makes home textiles, including window treatments, bedding, table coverings, pillows and cushions, and more. The shop offers fabrics and trims, and along with custom-sewn items, First Fruit’s workroom completes monogramming projects.
A Little History of French Country…
The French Country style of furnishings and accessories got its start in 18th-century France, where furniture designed and crafted in Paris ateliers for grand French homes was copied in the French provinces, with less elaborate ornamentation and with an intense focus on craft and workmanship. The style has seen a rebirth in American décor, particularly in the South, where it fits with the region’s down-home vibe and penchant for casual entertaining.
The tagline for First Fruit Collection is “Your Home Can Be Happy,” and its warm, homey selections and friendly staff back up that claim. First Fruit is located at 84 N. Main St., Collierville. 901-861-7111.
