Go Fishing in the Gulf
If your dad is an avid outdoorsman, you can't go wrong with fishing in the Gulf. Red snapper, king fish, drum fish and Spanish mackerel abound in the Gulf and Galveston Bay area, making a fishing trip for Father's Day a fun (and later delicious) experience.
Guided trips usually start at $400 and range from beachfront to deep-sea fishing packages. A number of charter boat companies in the Houston/Galveston area specialize in bay and deep-sea fishing, including: Fishing Galveston TX, Galveston Sea Ventures, Get Hooked Fishing Charter and Wave Dancer Charters.
Be sure to get an appropriate fishing license, as one is required before heading out on the water. The cost of licenses vary, depending on the type and length of the fishing trip, but start at $11 for residents and $16 for non-residents. Licenses are free for Texas active-duty military personnel and disabled veteran. It's a good idea to inquire with the charter company about what licenses, endorsements and tags are required for the scheduled trip so you are clear on what you'll need beforehand.
Take a Hike in Sam Houston National Forest
Get out of the city for the day to take a hike through one of Sam Houston National Forest's scenic trails. The forest is located just 50 miles north of Houston and a short jaunt off of I-45.
Check out the forest map for hike and bike trails, as well as for how to get to the breathtaking Big Creek Scenic Area. While there, be on the lookout for bald eagles and red-cockaded woodpeckers. Both of these endangered species call the forest their home.
If you're up for making a long weekend of it, stay at one of the forest's three camp grounds. Spaces are available by reservation or on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations for Double Lake and Cagle recreation areas can be made online or by calling 1-877-444-6777.

Take a Class at a Maker Space
For a dad who enjoys tinkering, take him to a class at a local maker space. Local spaces like Houston Makerspace and TXRX have intro classes on wood working basics or welding, where you can create an indoor/outdoor bench or small metal desk sculpture as you learn the basics. Not only do you get to learn something new and spend time together, but you'll also walk away with something tangible to commemorating your time together.
If woodworking or metalworking isn't his thing, there are also classes on silkscreening, gardening, 3D modeling — even beverage fermentation.
Classes vary from one-time offerings to multi-day courses and range in price from around $30 to around $400, often not including supply fees.
