Becasue Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina, residents and visitors are fortunate to have free access to many of the state's best assets and through North Carolina museums. These museums present a myriad of learning opportunities and offer hours of free enjoyment. Additional area museums offer free admission on certain days of the week or on certain times during the year. So grab your walking shoes and get ready to explore.

    The North Carolina Museum of Art

    Admission to the Museum’s permanent collection and Museum Park is free. There is a charge for some special exhibitions and programs, such as concerts, films, classes, and performances.

    The NC Museum of History is all about the history and heritage of North Carolina. Did you know NC has 7 historic lighthouses still in existance dating all the way back to 1817? That in 1903 Orville Wright flew the first power-driven airplane at Kill Devil Hills? He stays aloft for 12 seconds on the first trip. That the construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway began in 1935? Take a trip to the NC Museum of History and discover even more about great moments in the history of North Carolina. Admission is free.

    The NC Museum of Natural Sciences is dedicated to science and nature, and is the largest museum of its kind in the southeast. The museum is filled with four floors of exhibits, live animals and hands-on activities. The museum hosts programs daily. Segments such as the annual BugFest and Animal Grossology are exceptionally good at attracting and holding a kid's attention -- especially little boys. Free.

    The Nasher Museum of Art is dedicated to global contemporary and post-modern art. A burgoning private collection supports an ever changing array of forward-thinking exhibits and multi-media currations spanning artists, authors and timelines. The Nasher Museum is located on the campus of Duke University. Admission is free on Thursday evenings after 5 p.m.
