Summer in Pittsburgh is made for festivals, concerts, recreational activities and other great fun. What's even better is that some of them are free! We profile some of the best free things to do in the Pittsburgh area, including free concerts, free events, free activities and more free fun.

Three Rivers Arts Festival

Like most festivals, you can spend a fortune if you don't watch out — on food, games, and merchandise. But the Three Rivers Arts Festival offers free art, free live music, and free admission, making it a great way to spend a few hours without breaking the bank. The festival runs at the beginning of June each summer.

Allegheny County Summer Concert Series

Each summer, Allegheny County offers a variety of free concerts and performances at various parks and other locations throughout the county. Downtown, the free concerts occur in the courtyard of the Allegheny County Courthouse, while in the suburbs you can enjoy free concerts at the South Park Amphitheatre, Hartwood Acres, Boyce Park and North Park. All concerts in the Allegheny County summer concert series are free and open to the public, and begin at 7:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

Cinema in the Park

Grab a blanket and head out for an unforgettable evening of cinema under the stars. Pittsburgh Citipark's Cinema in the Park features popular family-friendly movies at seven Pittsburgh area parks. Movies are shown seven days a week (a different park each night) and run from the second weekend in June through the end of August. Best of all — they're free!

SouthSide Works Summer Entertainment Series

Head to the SouthSide Works on Friday and Saturday nights for free live music as part of the Summer Entertainment Series, held in the Southside Works Town Square. The free concerts are held on Wednesday nights from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., June through August.

Stars at Riverview Summer Jazz Series

Beautiful Riverview Park in Observatory Hill is the setting for the free Stars at Riverview Jazz Series, which features the best jazz musicians in Pittsburgh on Saturdays through August. Bring a blanket and lawn chair with you for performances from Roger Humphries, Kea Michaels, and more. Once the jazz concert is over, stick around for a free movie courtesy of Dollar Bank Cinema in the Park. The Stars at Riverview Jazz Series is sponsored by RadWorks and BNY Mellon.
