Inside Atlanta: Fox Brothers BBQ's Justin Fox

Atlanta restaurateur, Justin Fox, shares his favorite spots in Atlanta

Justin Fox, Fox Brothers BBQ

We're back with our series Inside Atlanta—each week, we sit down with influential locals to talk about what Atlanta means to them. Today we’re chatting with Justin Fox, one half of the duo that makes up Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q. You may know the Candler Park hotspot as one of the most popular barbecue restaurants in the city, or from its recent appearance on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. A native of Texas, Fox has been slow cooking meat in Atlanta for 15 years. When he’s not working or raising money for Hogs for the Cause, you can find him at his low-key hangout spots.

Today we get a tour of The Big Peach led by Fox himself.

I live in... “I live in Kirkwood.  I like it, because obviously it’s close to work but not far from everything else (Decatur, Downtown, Midtown... even OTP).”

I Wish People Knew... “what an exciting time it is to be in Atlanta right now. I think our food is better than it has been in a long time. Local chefs are doing amazing things here. The Art scene is taking off with the city supporting its local talent from murals and street art to paintings. People like R. Land, BlackCatTips and Catlanta are making some great art around town. And the movie industry is really helping ATL shine!”

You Can Find Me…            “I tend to keep it close to home, but when I do get out I’m usually at Universal Joint or Smith’s Olde Bar. But, I’m due for a trip for oysters at the Kimball House or The Optimist.”

It’s Dinner Time, I’m Headed to… “Miso Izakaya—sushi is my craving right now, and I can get the Dan Dan ramen and sushi at the same time. Umi Sushi is really good, as well, and I’m looking forward to trying Brush Sushi in Decatur.”

Clock Strikes 5’oclock, I’m Drinking… “if I’m not at Fox Bros sipping on a Watermelon Margarita in the summertime, then I'll head over to Universal Joint for an ice cold Budweiser. It's too close to my house.”

If I had to Stay in a Hotel, I’d Check Into… “the Georgian Terrace or the Westin Downtown. Heavenly beds, and the Georgian Terrace has Proof and Provision in the basement. As long as the hotel has a good bar and a comfy bed, I am fine with that. I love a good hotel bar!”

Atlanta’s Best Kept Secret is… “Kirkwood, but it isn’t staying that way for long. I moved here six years ago from Brookhaven to be closer to the restaurant and I have really become quite fond of it. It has more of a neighborhood feel to it, and the residents love to support the businesses, and the businesses like to support the neighborhood, as well. It's convenient to the interstates, Downtown, Midtown and the Perimeter (if I need to go OTP).  It's a quiet spot in the middle of the city.”

When I’m Playing Tourist I go to… “the College Football Hall of Fame and the Georgia Aquarium. Underwater life has always fascinated the beach bum in me, and an appreciation of the history of the sport is something I get from my father who was a big history buff. Then I would hit up Decatur one day, Buford highway another day and then Inman Park for a culinary tour. The best way to learn about an area is through the food.”

I Get My Sweat On… “The East Lake YMCA is right by my house. I like it because it's got a lot of things to offer and the staff is really nice. And did I mention it's right by my house?”

I Love Spending My Money at… “I'm not a fan of shopping (gawd bless the internet) but my guilty pleasure is shopping at liquor stores for different types of bourbon. Decatur Package Store is a great place to find anything that you might need, but they usually have something siting on the shelf that you can't find at most places.”
