There are not a lot of options for health spa retreats around Los Angeles. The exception is the Four Seasons Westlake Village with its Health and Longevity Institute. Located just 35 miles northwest of Los Angeles, beautifully landscaped grounds and a stunning spa setting with a backdrop of the Santa Monica Mountains creates an idyllic setting, interrupted only by the traffic flowing by on the 101 freeway.

The Four Seasons Westlake Village was created as a wellness destination, and that theme is incorporated into the decor, the landscaping, the restaurant menus and even the business center as well as the spa, fitness center and the Health and Longevity Institute.

The Four Seasons Westlake Village is not only a leisure resort. In addition to extensive meeting facilities equipped with state-of-the-art technology, there is a fully equipped television studio, with additional locations in the hotel and around the grounds equipped for live broadcasting.

    The Hotel

The Four Seasons Westlake Village occupies a six story building on the grounds of Dole's corporate headquarters, which is built in the same classic contemporary architectural style. The 270 guest rooms, including 26 suites and the 2,525-square-foot Presidential Suite occupy the top 4 floors.

The décor makes extensive use of marble and other natural stone as art elements, with a framed slab of green onice smeraldo above the matching reception desk. Backlit red carnelian adds a highlight near the elevators and cobalt blue agate complements the indoor pool. Inlaid floors, ceiling and stairwell murals, and Regency style furnishings with dark woods and custom Asian-themed prints bring to mind European summer palaces.

Most rooms either face the waterfall gardens with a backdrop of the partially screened 101 freeway and the Santa Monica Mountains or the entry courtyard that looks across Dole Drive and a landscaped median island to Dole Headquarters.

This is one of the most comfortable hotels I've ever visited. I didn't want to leave. I often find hotel furnishings uncomfortable, but at the Four Seasons Westlake Village, I didn't want to get out of the comfy rocking chair to go to bed, didn't want to leave the plush bed in the morning, and I lingered as long as possible in the tranquil spa. I was basically ready to move in.

Like the rest of the hotel, the rooms are decorated in regency style, which is rather busy. There were 7 different fabric patterns in my room, with the central theme being the blue and white Chinese ceramic vases that are ubiquitous throughout the hotel. The designs work well together, so it gives the impression of luxury and comfort, but it made enough of an impression on me that I had to stop and count.

My Premier King Room had two comfortable easy chars that shared a foot stool and two desk chairs, so two people could both relax or work, which is rare. There are convenient outlets at desk-level,...MORE although I always want more than the two provided. There was no available outlet by the bed for cell phone charging without unplugging the lamp.

The bathroom had both a shower stall and separate large tub, with the toilet in its own cubicle. A TV is mounted on the wall near the sink, visible from the tub. A lighted makeup/shaving mirror is mounted on the other side of the sink.

A spacious walk-in closet with two luggage racks makes it easy to keep the room clutter-free.

The coffee/tea service was generously supplied and included jet lag therapy tea, raw sugar and stevia in addition to standard coffees, teas and sweeteners. The auto-deduct mini-bar also had healthy beverages in addition to standard options.

Nine acres of landscaped gardens surrounding both buildings provide paths for walking or jogging. A highlight of the extensive gardens is the waterfall pond, which flows around boulders brought from the River Kwai in Thailand. The grass lawn around the pond is a popular event space and a wedding gazebo overlooks the waterfalls.

A Chinese pagoda is the centerpiece of the meditation garden. Other themed gardens include a rose garden, herb garden, botanical garden and bonsai viewing garden.

All of the restaurants and dining options at the Four Seasons Westlake Village include a variety of wellness choices designed not only for weight loss or maintenance, but to optimize nutrition for healthy living and disease prevention.

The Lobby Lounge provides casual American cuisine for breakfast, lunch, dinner, cocktails and afternoon tea, with live music on weekends in a regency setting that keeps up the hotel's theme. It is also, literally, the lobby lounge, where you can hang out and meet the rest of your party or read a book in comfortable sofas and chairs without ordering anything.

Onyx is an Asian-themed restaurant open for dinner. Beyond sushi, Onyx offers well-conceived Asian-inspired steaks, seafood and vegetarian dishes.

Hamptons, located on the lower level, offers Jazz Champagne Sunday Brunch Buffet on the Waterfall Lawn on weekends.

The Bar offers a limited food menu in addition to a selections of beers, wines and a full bar.

The Lookout Lounge next to the Bar and Lobby...MORE Lounge is an outdoor patio overlooking the waterfall lawn.

In-room and pool-side dining at the Serenity Pool in the Spa are also available.

I have not been to every spa in Southern California, but I have seen many, and the Spa at the Four Seasons Westlake Village is the most beautiful spa I've visited in the area. The therapists and aestheticians are also among the most skilled.

The 40,000 spare-foot facility includes 28 treatment rooms, separate men's and women's lounges, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs and inhalation therapy rooms as well as a coed lounge and couples treatment suites.

At the center of the spa is the "fluidity fountain" which separates the men's and women's lounge areas. A wall of flowing water is a backdrop to arrangements of exotic orchids, with paper lanterns suspended from the skylight above. The two sides are connected by a red wooden foot bridge that leads to the treatment rooms.

There is an outdoor serenity pool with multiple hot tubs and shade cabanas. Healthful spa dining is available poolside. At the far end of the pool, the path leads to the Chinese pagoda in the...MORE meditation garden.

The indoor lap pool is in a separate building behind the hotel next to the waterfall garden.

Yamaguchi Salon offers hair, nail and make-up services.

Hotel guests have access to both pools and all spa amenities. Anyone who books a spa treatment, also has full access to all spa and fitness amenities for the day.

On weekdays only, day use fees are also available to use the spa amenities without booking a room or a treatment. At the basic level, you can access the sauna, steam room, hot tub and other areas within the lounge, along with the outdoor pool. For a little more, you can also use the indoor pool and fitness facilities.

    Spa memberships are also available.

The 16,000-square-foot fitness center at the Four Seasons Westlake Village is more comprehensive than most fitness facilities in the city, due not only to its cutting-edge equipment, but also to its analysis and training techniques.

There's everything you need to keep up your training regimen, from weight training equipment and cardio machines to a yoga and Pilates studio, lap pool and running path. If you don't have a workout routine - or even if you do, start with a metabolic analysis and let the in-house fitness trainer help develop a training schedule that will work best for you.

The fitness center at the Four Seasons is available to guests of the hotel and those booking spa treatments at no additional charge, or can be included in a day-use spa/fitness package. Fitness center memberships are also available to locals. Fitness trainer services are available for an additional fee.

The California Health and Longevity Institute at the Four Seasons Westlake Village can serve many purposes, but is ultimately designed for people who want to kick-start a healthy lifestyle by getting a full analysis of their current state of health.

The Institute is better-equipped than any local clinic you've ever visited, with just about every kind of diagnostic equipment that might prove useful. No need to send you elsewhere for that MRI, CAT scan or cardio test. From dermatology to dentistry to acupuncture, you can do it all right here.

The doctors and other health care practitioners at the Health and Longevity Institute work extensively with guests who come in on a three to five-day health analysis program. They provide executive physicals to a number of corporations and also see local patients.

It costs a pretty penny, but if your time is more valuable than the money, the convenience of having a full health analysis done within a few days at one location can be worth the...MORE expense. Add in personal fitness training, spa treatments, nutritional consultation and a cooking class for some extra motivation to make some changes.

Even if you're not taking advantage of the services at the California Health and Longevity Institute, there are a variety of pleasant lounges around the facility where guests can make themselves comfortable.

There is art everywhere you look at the Four Seasons Westlake Village. Original art and antique furnishings line the walls in all the public areas. Some are even for sale. It's worth exploring the corridors to see what's on view.

But art appreciation at the Four Seasons' doesn't end in the hallways. A full-fledged art gallery fills the second story of the building that connects the main hotel to the Spa and the California Health and Longevity Institute. It overlooks a fountain that features one of the boulders from the River Kwai in Thailand. The gallery hosts a variety of contemporary art exhibits by California artists.

The Art Gallery at the Four Seasons Westlake Village is available for receptions.
