With Fort Lauderdale's rise to one of the most successful and popular gay resort getaways in the world, and particular a noteworthy destination for fans of clothing-optional resorts and gay nightlife cruising, it's entirely fitting that this land of warm and sunny temperatures, gorgeous beaches, and swaying palms is a favorite vacation spot with single men eager to meet other guys.
The several clothing-optional resorts in town are all, to a varying extent, good bets for finding action, whether one-on-one or group fun. Some of these resorts are geared more to guys who simply want to sunbathe nude and aren't necessarily angling to meet others, while others cultivate a decidedly high sexual energy, where group fun in the hot tub and by the pool, especially late at night, is commonplace and encouraged. Some of them, including Inn Leather and Windamar Beach Resort (described below), sell day passes.
There's also a popular gay stretch of sand, Sebastian Street Gay Beach, near the main cluster of gay resorts, on Highway A1A on Fort Lauderdale Beach, between Sebastian and Alhambra streets - it's just across from and south of the gay-popular restaurant, Casablanca Cafe, which is a nice place to have brunch or cocktails in between swimming and sunbathing. There are also some fun gay beaches to the south, in Dade County, including world-famous Haulover Beach, which is clothing-optional.
Gay Bathhouses and Sex Clubs
Right in the middle of downtown Fort Lauderdale, and drawing a mix of locals and visitors ranging from buffed younger guys to laid-back retirees, Club Fort Lauderdale ranks among the most extensive, well-maintained, and attractive bathhouses in North America. It's part of the well-known "Club" gay bathhouse brand, with other outposts in Indianapolis, Dallas, St. Louis, Orlando, Houston, and Columbus. Inside this spacious spread, which is open 24/7 and tends to get especially busy on weekends (all day and night), you'll find a good-size gym, lovely cabanas adjoining a spacious outdoor pool with plenty of deck chairs, lush landscaping, and sunning areas.
There are also lockers, rooms of several sizes, a handsome indoor lounge, surround-sound media rooms, a group shower room, and a grotto-inspired steam room. The entire place is very well kept, and it's a terrific option if you're seeking the gay clothing-optional experience but aren't able to stay at one of the gay resorts in the area.
Set in the small Broward County city of Wilton Manors, which has one of the highest concentrations of gay residents of any community in the country, the Slammer is a 21-and-older hotspot (it's absolutely packed on weekends into the wee hours) is a very fun sex club for men of all ages and types looking to hook up. Customers can pay for a one-time membership and can bring their own liquor. The club opens at 5 pm on weekdays, and 8 pm on weekends, and keeps going strong until morning. There's a live DJ on weekends, and the amenities here favor fans of kink: glory holes, mazes, slings, and similar paraphernalia.
It's a sibling to the infamously randy LA sex club, The Slammer.
For years pulling in a loyal crowd of daddies, bears, leather dudes, otters, and generally rough-and-ready guys since it opened its doors back in 1977, Clubhouse II is the more retro (though some might say dated) and laid-back of Fort Lauderdale's bathhouses. It's not fancy as the swankier Club Fort Lauderdale and can be a little tricky to find (it's inside the Park-Lane Building, a strip mall along Rte. 816 between the beaches and U.S. 1, on the northeast side of town), but it has lower rates both for lockers and memberships.
The facilities are less snazzy, but a lot of guys -- especially those in their 40s and older, those into leather and kink, and bearish sorts -- really prefer this establishment. The Tuesday leather nights are usually a big draw, and the Thursday bear parties also have a reliable following.
Cruisy, Clothing-Optional Gay Resorts
Among the gay resorts in Fort Lauderdale where you're most likely to find plenty of willing guys and enthusiastic cruising, you should definitely consider the complex of three very popular and fun adjoining resorts known as Alcazar Resort, Villa Venice, and Worthington Guesthouse -- together, this complex has 63 rooms, and the men here can congregate among two very nice pools and two large hot tubs, both of which are open and clothing-optional around the clock. It's one of the best resorts in the country for gay men looking to have a little fun and meet like-minded guys.
However, keep in mind that this resort doesn't sell day passes -- it's really only a viable option if you spend the night (or meet somebody staying there).
Around the corner, however, you can buy day passes or book overnight accommodations at the Windamar Beach Resort, a friendly, low-attitude men's resort that has a bit of a European vibe -- it's not fancy, but it offers reasonable rates and a sexually charged atmosphere. Windamar passes will get you use of the Windamar pool and six-man hot tub, a playroom showing porn, and lockers (although day guests are asked to bring their own beach towels). On a space-available basis, you can also book a "day room" -- basically one of the resort's standard rooms, just while you're on the property for the day, if you're wishing for a bit of privacy.
A short drive from the beach and main gay resort area and catering to guys into kink, leather, uniforms, Levi's, S&M, and all-around dirty fun, the highly popular Inn Leather also has overnight accommodations as well as hosting a number of events and fundraisers for the community. At this clothing-option men's plex that's been a fixture in the community since 1999, guests can choose from 12 different rooms (some with slings), and amenities include two sun decks, outdoor showering areas, a good-size pool and hot tub.
Inn Leather also throws wildly popular pool parties about once a month, with a DJ and food and drinks.
