April also marks spring break season for many schools in the U.S., coaxing families to flock to "The Sunshine State." This trend shows in theme park attendance, as the first three weeks of the month tend to be crowded at Disney World, Epcot Center, and Universal Studios, while attendance is moderate during the last week of the month. The beaches see a high volume of tourists, as well, even though the water isn't super warm yet. Still, if you long for a spring reprieve, chock full of fun events like a film festival and concerts, Florida welcomes you with plenty of things to keep you busy. Florida Weather in April Florida, located in a sub-tropical zone, experiences excellent weather year-round. But April in particular boasts warm, sunny days that are not oppressively hot. Depending on the location you visit and its proximity to the coast, temperatures can vary, as southern and inland locations tend to be warmer than coastal communities. The saying "April showers bring May flowers" doesn't quite apply to Florida, as the summer months bring much more rain, leaving April relatively dry in comparison. Miami, for example, sees just 3.2 inches of rain in April, which is usually distributed over several days that land later in the month. The chances of rain increase into May and over the summer. Water temperatures vary across the state, from north to south and east to west, since Florida is surrounded by two different bodies of water. The Gulf of Mexico (Tampa and Naples) is generally warmer than the Atlantic Ocean and enjoys ocean temperatures hovering around 71° Fahrenheit (21° Celsius) in April. On the Atlantic side of the state (Jacksonville and Daytona Beach), expect to find sea temperatures averaging around 63° Fahrenheit (17° Celsius) in April. However, the warmest water can be found at the southern tip of the state around Miami and the Florida Keys. You will also want to pack shorts, sleeveless tops, and sandals, as well as nicer resort-casual clothing for going out to dinner. Whether you're walking around downtown Miami or trekking through Disneyworld, you'll also need comfortable walking shoes or sandals with support. A light waterproof jacket is also a Florida travel necessity. Even though April tends to be dry, a surprise thunderstorm may pop up and catch you off guard. Lastly, pack a light sweater or long-sleeved shirt for enjoying the evenings outdoors.
