San Antonio, Texas, knows how to party. It doesn't just do one fiesta. It does a whole Fiesta Week. And that week isn't just one week long. It spans 10 days. Sometimes more. In 2019, Fiesta Week will be held from Thursday, April 18, through Sunday, April 28.

The Fiesta San Antonio Commission calls the annual fiesta the “grandmother” of events. It includes the Miss Fiesta San Antonio competition, parades, music, athletic events, vendors of all kinds and more. The Fiesta Store is also a big draw.

If you’re planning a visit to Texas, you’ll definitely want to plan ahead and include the Fiesta Week in your itinerary.

History of Fiesta Week

Fiesta San Antonio, previously called Fiesta San Jacinto, is typically a 10-day festival. It evolved from the 1891 flower parade conceived by Ellen Maury Slayden, wife of Congressman James L. Slayden, as an April 21 salute to the heroes of the battles of the Alamo and San Jacinto.

With the arrival of fair weather, participants in carriages pelted one another with flowers as they rounded Alamo Plaza. A group of San Antonio women then formed the Battle of Flowers Association. By 1895, an elaborate weeklong celebration surrounded the Battle of Flowers Parade and the event, which we enjoy today, was born.

More information on the colorful history of Fiesta Week can be found on the University of Texas website. Also, learn more about today's civic and patriotic Battle of the Flowers Association on the association's colorful website.

Today's Fiesta Week

Fiesta San Antonio takes place in April of each year. It usually starts the Friday on or before April 21, San Jacinto Day.

Fiesta is a citywide, fun-filled, multicultural, family-oriented celebration. With more than 100 different events, it's the biggest party and greatest community benefit in the state of Texas. Enjoy parades, festivals, art exhibitions, parties and more. One highlight is the Tastes of Texas experience, where VIPs can taste food prepared by local chefs, prepared with local wine and craft beer.
