Generally, all-inclusive resorts offer all food and drinks and a few on-site activities, but if you want to explore the area away from the resort, you have to pay extra. A new brand of luxury resorts is changing that. The Explorean resorts, owned by Grupo Posadas, the same company that is responsible for the Fiesta Americana brand, offers a concept of all-inclusive luxury comforts combined with the opportunity to commune with the surroundings in a variety of ways. The resorts are small, with all the attention to detail one would expect from a boutique hotel, but offering the advantages of an all-inclusive resort.
The special bonus at The Explorean is that a daily excursion to explore the surrounding area is included in the room rate. Guests discover remote and historic Mayan sites, hike through the jungle and the resort grounds, spot birds and wildlife, rappel along rock walls, cycle through the forest, explore waterways on catamarans, kayaks and boats, as well as learning about the local culture.
Explorean Resorts offer a new and interesting option for travelers who not only wish to experience luxury and relaxation but would also like to include some adventure and nature activities in their vacation. They are ideal for active couples who want to get away from it all and enjoy adventurous activities but also like to be pampered. There are only two resorts at present, both along the Mexican Caribbean in the state of Quintana Roo, but, hopefully, in time the brand will grow to include more properties.
The Explorean Cozumel
Located on the island of Cozumel, Mexico's premier diving destination, The Explorean Cozumel is very close to the Fiesta Americana Cozumel, but offers a very different take on the all-inclusive concept: it's a small, secluded resort with just 56 rooms, and offers personalized attention and the chance to have some authentic experiences in the surrounding area. Guests may take advantage of the services and restaurants at the sister property, but many prefer the laid-back ambiance and attentive service at The Explorean.
A daily excursion from around 10 am to 3 pm daily is included in the room rate. Some of the activities guests enjoy include discovering the underwater world on a snorkeling expedition, exploring the nearby San Gervasio archaeological site, or going on a sailing excursion around the island.
The Explorean Kohunlich
The Explorean Kohunlich is located about a 40-minute drive from Chetumal, the capital city of Quintana Roo, a much less visited area, south of Cancun and the Riviera Maya, set on a hilltop overlooking the Yucatecan jungle. This property is even more secluded than the one in Cozumel and is ideal for travelers who desire a true escape. The area is home to jungles, cenotes, and lagoons, as well as living Maya culture.
Guests at this hotel feel like adventurers in a remote land: there are no TVs and spotty cell phone service. Wifi is available in the lobby area. Rooms, though minimalist, are comfortable and well-appointed, and service is unfailingly attentive. Some of the offered excursions include a two-mile bike ride to the little-known Maya archaeological site of Los Mascarones, rappelling a 30-foot wall to enjoy spectacular views over the jungle, kayaking or sailing in a catamaran around the beautiful Bacalar Lagoon to discover its multiple shades of blues. An on-site spa offers relaxing treatments at the end of a day of adventures. Of course, guests who choose not to participate in the included excursions can enjoy leisurely days by the pool watching the wildlife in the surrounding jungle, or check out a bicycle and explore the nearby Kohunlich archaeological site independently.
