Whether you get a bad currywurst or find yourself on the wrong end of a Silvester bottle rocket, there is a good chance you are going to need a Krankenhaus (hospital) if you stay in Berlin long enough.

Germany is very safe and care is generally excellent with high-end facilities and well-trained staff. And though most hospitals are able to provide some foreign language services, some specialize in English language to better accommodate foreigners in need.

Most care is covered by state health insurance (Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) as about 85 percent of the population is covered under the basic plan. Most also accept private insurance (Private Krankenversicherung) which may be more common among expats. For emergency care, call 112 from anywhere in Europe. Calls are free of charge with services available 24 hours, 7 days a week.

In addition, pharmacies or Apothekes can be found throughout the city and are usually marked with a red "A" with a snake. Most Apoteheker(in) are proficient in English or can find someone to assist you. If you need a pharmacy after business hours (around 8:00 to 18:00), each pharmacy displays the contact information of the nearest 24-hour pharmacy (Notdienst / Apothekennotdienst). Note that there will is an extra charge for using this service and cash payments may be required. If you're in need of additional services, there is a 24-hour pharmacy helpline: 01189 and a website with all available pharmacies.

Be careful out there! And if you do find yourself in need of help, these hospitals can come to your aid.
