Edmond - Oklahoma City Metro Area Community Profile

About Edmond:

Originally named "Summit" when its status as a high point along the Sante Fe rail line made it an appropriate water station for the steam engines, Edmond was later named after Edmond Burdick, a freight agent for the railroad. The city has grown exponentially over the past couple of decades and is one of more affluent areas around the metro. Edmond also has another side, though, as its status as a "college town" increases due to the expanding enrollment at the University of Central Oklahoma, formerly Central State University.

Edmond possesses a quaint and historic downtown area that features plenty of unique shops and popular annual events such as a summer Arts Festival and LibertyFest celebrations for the 4th of July. As well as frequently being named one of the better small communities in the nation, such as the ranking as one of the "Best Places to Live" in 2007 by Relocate America, Edmond is known for a top school system, very low crime rate, and notable citizens such as Shannon Miller and BMX rider Mat Hoffman.

Location:

The boundaries of Edmond, located just north of Oklahoma City up I-235 (Broadway Extension) continue to change, it seems, as the city grows. The city stretches as far south as Memorial Rd. between Kelly and Boulevard and as far north as Waterloo between Sante Fe and Bryant. Portions of Edmond reach Pennsylvania Ave. on the west side and extend east beyond Lake Arcadia.

Demographics:

The population of Edmond is over 80,000, placing it as one of the 6 largest cities in the state.
