Discovery Green is one of the best parks in Houston. It is fun, family-oriented and — best of all — free. Throughout the year, they feature numerous free activities, including exercise classes, concerts, holiday-themed celebrations and more. In the winter time, Discovery Green's one-acre lake is transformed into an ice-skating rink. Continue reading this FAQ page to help you plan your trip to Discovery Green.

When was Discovery Green opened?

Discovery Green officially opened on April 13, 2008. The site had previously been 19th-century, high-end residences and then later a series of parking lots. The construction of the park helped to turn a drab, concrete slab into a beautiful green space in the heart of Downtown Houston.

How big is the park?

In total, Discovery Green is nearly 12 acres large, and includes a small lake, performance spaces and, of course, plenty of green grass and trees.

Where is it located?

Discovery Green is located at 1500 McKinney Street in Downtown Houston, within walking proximity to the Toyota Center, the George R. Brown Convention Center and the Hilton Americas Hotel.

What are the hours of operation?

Discovery Green is open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., though times may vary for special events. Before heading to the park, check their website to confirm their hours.

Are there restrooms at Discovery Green?

Yes, restrooms are located in the Alkek Building near the center of the park, as well as near the Fondren Foundation Performance Space on the other side of the park by the parking garage entry off of Avenida de las Americas.

Am I allowed to bring my own food?

Although they do sell food at Discovery Green (everything from burgers and hot dogs to upscale dining), you are allowed to bring your own food. You may also bring your own ice chests and lawn chairs. Glass bottles or containers are not allowed. Neither are alcoholic beverages.

Are dogs allowed?

Yes. The park is equipped with two dog runs — the Kinder Large Dog Run for dogs taller than 15 inches and the Joe Foster Small Dog Run for those shorter than 15 inches. Owners must pick up after their dogs, and there is a 45 minute limit for time in the dog runs as well as a number of other restrictions.

Where can I park?

There are three primary methods of parking at Discovery Green: metered parking, surface lots and parking garages.

Metered parking is available on the surrounding streets. During the week, you will be required to pay for parking up until 6 p.m. On the weekends it is free.

There are several surface lots near the park as well. You will be required to pay to park at these at all times. Rates vary, but expect to pay around $10 or more if there are special events.

Garage parking is available as well. There are several garages nearby within reasonable walking distance. Use this great interactive guide to parking in Downtown Houston, or check out one of these locations near the park:
