Denver, a city with a quite eclectic gay nightlife scene that includes more than a dozen gay bars situated among several different neighborhoods, has a pair of venues where gay guys hook up. One of these is very close to downtown, in what's actually morphed in recent years from a slightly out-of-the-way and iffy neighborhood into one of the city's trendiest areas, LoHi (or Lower Highlands). This is where you'll find the most popular of the two gay bathhouses in the city, Midtowne Spa (2935 Zuni St., 303-458-8902), which is part of the extensive national brand of Midtowne bathhouses that has outposts in Dallas , Houston, Milwaukee, and three areas around greater Los Angeles: Hollywood, LA proper, and Wilmington.

Midtowne Spa

As is typical of gay bathhouses, Midtowne Spa is open 24/7 - it's in a large, historic brick building that's a short cab ride or drive from downtown and within walking distance of several chain hotels (Residence Inn Denver Downtown, Hampton Inn & Suites Denver-Speer Boulevard, and Budget Host Inn, among them). Live shows are staged a couple of times a week, and all sorts of themed events are held at different times of the month - "sun worshipper" specials, j/o parties, leather nights, military specials (with discounts for all active duty, reserves, and retired military), twink nights, and gatherings of the Front Range Bears. This place is very popular with all types, pretty much regardless of what's going on, but especially on weekends. Fun features include a jail cell, dungeon, and a good-size enclosed outdoor area with hot tub, plus the usual amenities - steam rooms, sauna, booths, private rooms, and the like.

Memberships are very reasonable - just $4 for the year and lockers are cheapest late on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights (just $7, vs the usual $16 most of the time, and $18 on weekends.

Denver Swim Club

Still extremely popular but catering to more of a locals crowds and situated well east of downtown out on Colfax Avenue (about a 5-mile drive from the city center), the Denver Swim Club (6923 E.

Colfax Ave., 303-322-4023) has been a fixture of Denver's gay bathhouse scene for many years. One big advantage of being out here is that with real estate less pricey than downtown, space isn't at such a premium - this huge club with a spacious outdoor pool and surrounding lanai is a whopping 10,000 square feet, meaning that you won't quickly run out of fun places to explore and meet new friends. The outdoor grounds are quite nice, and recent renovations to the interior have been much appreciated by some who had grumbled a bit about things become a bit dated. DSC draws all types but generally has a reputation for being a bit less stand-and-model than Midtowne Spa, but in Denver on the whole, folks are pretty friends at both clubs. The club has both outdoor and indoor pools (in winter, the latter is definitely a nice feature); there's also an indoor hot tub, private rooms with slings, porn video arcades with glory holes, a dark and cruise-y fun area called the Caves, a steam room, and plenty more. Rates are pretty comparable to Midtowne Spa, although each of these places has specials and deals at any given time that can make one more affordable than the other.
