Traveling south from Albuquerque into the countryside has its benefits, such as visiting the Cowboy Camelids Alpaca Farm where kids can pet the animals, and stopping in at De Smet Dairy and Creamery to purchase raw milk. De Smet is a mere 20-minute ride south into Bosque Farms, which lies just below the Isleta Reservation. De Smet Farms have been around for some time, but Farmer Mike started selling raw milk at his farm around 2010 and is now supplying the popular drink to a public that just can't seem to get enough.

The dairy sells New Mexico's only Grade A raw milk. Raw milk has not been pasteurized or homogenized. Non-homogenized milk has the cream separate from the milk, so it has to be shook up. When you open the bottle, the cream has gathered at the top. Non-pasteurized milk hasn't been heat treated, so the active enzymes remain in the milk, along with beneficial bacteria.

The cows at De Smet graze on open, grassy fields. They're happy cows, which no doubt has something to do with the good flavor of the milk. I know from experience that the milk makes excellent ice cream as well as cheese and butter.

Where to Buy the Milk

De Smet Farm in Bosque Farms is a quick stop off South or West Bosque Loop, on McNew Lane. The small operation has a system for buyers to pick up milk in case someone isn't in the shop. Simply pay and get the milk from the refrigerator. While there, stop by to see the cows, which are more often than not grazing the fields. They're quite tame.

In Albuquerque, you can pick up milk at Moses Kountry Health Foods (7115 4th St NW, Los Ranchos De Albuquerque, 87107) between 9 am and 6 pm on Monday - Saturday.

In Santa Fe, pick up your milk at the La Montañita Co-op (913 West Alameda St., Santa Fe, 87501) from 7 am - 10 pm on Mondays - Sundays.

The raw milk can also be found at Mountain View Market in Las Cruces; the Taos Food Cooperative in Taos; the Los Alamos Cooperative Market in Los Alamos; at the Dixon Coop in Dixon, and at Dory Farms in Hobbs.
