What is Slugging?

Slugging is a term used to describe a unique form of commuting from Northern Virginia to Washington, DC by using instant carpooling, or slug-lines. Slugging is an organized system where people commuting into the city stop to pickup other passengers (even though they are complete strangers!). There are set rules and specific pickup and drop-off locations to make this a win/win solution for a lot of commuting issues.

Thousands of commuters are getting to work for FREE by slugging. The passenger saves money and gets to work faster than by bus, metro, or train. The driver saves time because he can use the HOV lanes (3 or more occupants are required). Slugging is also a great way to reduce gasoline consumption as well as help the environment. Northern Virginia has had some form of slugging since the HOV lanes were built in the 1970s. Seems like a good idea that ought catch on in Maryland too!
