A Guide to Local Recreation Programs in DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia

Most of the communities in the Washington DC metropolitan area offer summer camps and recreation programs for residents. There are swim programs, classes and camps to entertain and educate kids of all ages. These are usually very reasonably priced programs, held at local schools, parks and community centers. Here is a guide to the most popular community operated summer camps and recreation programs in DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia.

Washington DC

DC Parks and Recreation Summer Camps
Ages 3-17. The DC Department of Parks and Recreation offers a variety of summer programs for kids including sports camps, aquatic camps, therapeutic camps, and other day camps.

Maryland

Montgomery County Recreation Camps
Ages 3-21. Camps provide a variety of age appropriate activities to entertain and enrich kids during the summer months. Field trips and/or special events add excitement to the activities. Recreation Department outdoor pools offer swimming opportunities.

City of Rockville Summer Camps
Ages 3-16. Rockville offers more than 65 camps with a variety of themes, including sports, arts, crafts, nature, science, rocketry, skateboarding, swimming, travel and more. 

City of Gaithersburg Summer Camps
Ages 4-14. Three types of summer camp programs are available: All Day Camp Programs offers campers a full range of activities including games and sports to swimming and field trips.

Youth Activity Programs offers a shorter day camp experience, from 8:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. and Specialty Camp Programs include clinics such as volleyball, tennis, and skateboarding.

Prince George’s County Department of Recreation Summer Camps
Ages 5-17.  Summer Day Camps, Summer Playgrounds, and Summer Xtreme Teen Centers offer swimming, arts and crafts, hobbies, fitness, martial arts, nature, sports, and much more.

Northern Virginia

City of Alexandria Summer Camps
Ages 3-17. Programs include a wide variety of activities ranging from sports and science to swimming and nature activities.  Full and half day camps are available.

Arlington Department of Parks and Recreation Summer Camps
Ages 3-18. Classic Camps offer a variety of programming options, both structured and unstructured, that include art, sports, trips and more.  Overnight Camps, Nature, Adventure or History Camps,  Creative Arts Camps,  Sports Camps,  Camps for Individuals with Disabilities,  Imagination Exploration Camps and Community Center Based Camps are also available.

Fairfax County Park Authority Camps
Ages 4-14. Programs include a wide variety of activities ranging from sports and science to swimming and nature activities.  Full and half day camps are available.

Reston Association Camps
Ages 3-16. Programs include Nature Tots, Hug-A-Tree, Walker's Rangers, Sportsters, Camp on Wheels, Teen Camp, Junior Lifeguarding, Counselor-In-Training and more.

Loudoun County Parks and Recreation Camps
Ages 5-14. Camps range full-day camps for grades K-8, adaptive recreation camps, and a wide variety of sports and specialty camps. Activities include outdoor adventures, sports, art exploration, horsemanship, science, nature, leadership development, and much more.
