The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad runs through Ohio's only National Park, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, from Cleveland to Akron and Canton. A variety of excursions are offered year-round and each trip is a different adventure filled with fun, history and beautiful scenery.

History

In 1880, trains transported coal between Cleveland, Akron, and Canton. Passengers also used the trains for transportation to these areas.

Once automobiles, trucks, and buses came along, the competition was too much for the train service. However, in 1972, the railway came alive again as a scenic excursion.

Scenic Excursions

Sit back, relax, and enjoy a train ride in a vintage climate-controlled coach. There are many different scenic trips available, from a short 1-3/4 hour train ride to a full day excursion. Take in the beauty of nature on a 41-mile round-trip through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio's only national park. You can also travel to many of Akron's best attractions including Hale Farm and Village, Stan Hywet Hall and Garden or the Akron Zoo.

Visitors can take the train further down to Canton to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, or to the Canton Museum of Art. For those that like to bike or hike on the Towpath Trail, you can take the train one-way and return on foot or bike.

Special Events

The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad host a number special events throughout the year for all ages.

Examples include the Wine-Tasting Express, Murder Mysteries, the Easter Bunny Express, Thomas the Train, the Halloween Express, a Christmas Tree Adventure, The Polar Express, Storytelling on the Train on various topics, and much more. Many special events sell out early, so reserve your spot soon. A complete schedule can be found at their website.

Educational Programs

There are many special programs designed for children in preschool through eighth grade. Children will enjoy learning about the local history of transportation, the natural resources and animals in the national park, and about the Underground Railroad. Other field trips are just to enjoy the train ride to local attractions.

The Cuyahoga Valley National Park's rangers and volunteers are on board to narrate the trip, providing knowledgeable information on the area's history. Many programs are designed to meet the Ohio Proficiency Testing standards in cooperation with curriculum materials.
