Want a Minnesota-grown Christmas tree? And the pride that you chose it, cut it down, and brought it home yourself? Christmas tree farms in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area grow trees for you to cut yourself, or you can pick out a fresh-cut tree for the holidays.
Most Christmas tree farms in the Twin Cities area are open on weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas during the 2017 season, but weather, demand, and other factors can affect opening hours and availability of trees, so call the farm before you set out on your tree-cutting journey.

Drive or walk into the Christmas tree field to pick out and cut your own tree at Covered Bridge Tree Farm in Forest Lake. The farm will loan you a saw, give you twine, and shake off any dead needles for free. There's a small charge to wrap up trees. Every tree, all varieties, and sizes are $57.95 in 2017, and there are free cookies and hot drinks in the gift shop.
Covered Bridge is open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the holiday season in 2017. Call first to be sure the farm is not closed because of weather.

Gifford's in Lakeville is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Nov. 24 to Dec. 24 in 2017. You can cut your own tree or buy one from the farm that has been pre-cut. Gifford's grows eight different kinds of Christmas trees, so you will have a wide choice, no matter whether you cut your own or buy a tree the farm has cut for you. Gifford's takes cash or checks only.

Several varieties of Christmas trees are grown at Halley's Tree Farm in Forest Lake. Cut your own tree or pick out a freshly cut tree, then sip some free hot apple cider to warm up before heading home. In 2017, Halley's is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m on Sundays, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays through Fridays starting Nov. 24.

Hampton Hills, near Hampton, and Rum River, near Anoka, have the same owners. Rum River, northwest of the Twin Cities, has the larger selection of trees, and Hampton Hills is a little closer to the metro area, especially for those in the southern suburbs. You can cut your own tree or buy one that's been pre-cut at both farms. Both farms are open every day through Dec. 22, 2017. Hampton Hills is open from 9 a.m. to 4:15, with the pre-cut lot open until 4:30 p.m. Rum River is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the pre-cut lot stays open until 7 p.m.Continue to 5 of 8 below.

Hansen Tree Farm in Ramsey is open in 2017 from Nov. 18 to Dec. 17 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The farm provides saws, maps to the best trees, and free hot drinks. And the staff will bale up your tree and attach it to your car to get it ready to take home. Go on a hayride while you're there and enjoy the farm's forested setting. As well as cut-your-own trees, there are cut trees for sale. Hansen's is the closest tree farm to the Twin Cities and is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Minneapolis.

The Krueger family has been farming this land near Lake Elmo in the St. Croix Valley since 1916 and has been growing Christmas trees since 1954. It's one of the most convenient farms to St. Paul and the east metro area, You can cut your own tree or buy a pre-cut tree. Krueger's says it has a limited selection of trees to cut yourself in 2017 but plenty of pre-cut trees. Cut your own tree, and they will shake it, wrap it, and tie it onto your car for you.
The farm is open from Nov. 18 to Dec. 24, 2017, from noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The cut-your-own fields close at 4:30 p.m. every day. If you go in the evening, you'll be treated to a crackling bonfire, Christmas lights, and a cup of warm cider.

You can choose from 50,000 trees at Revak Nursery in Lakeville and Elco New Market Farm or choose your tree from a large selection of pre-cut trees at Revak Nursery. Cut-your-own trees are all $59.95 no matter the size or variety. Hours vary depending on the location, the type of tree you want, and the day. Check the website before you head out.
