St. John's Recreation Center

A Recreational Gem in Crown Heights

Located in the diverse neighborhood of Crown Heights, and adjacent to Bedford-Stuyvesant, the St. John's Recreation Center is part of the urban legacy of Robert Moses. Opened in 1951 and renovated in the late 1980s, it’s considered a fine year-round recreation area, particularly for teens. It is one of seven large indoor public recreation facilities run by the New York Parks Department in Brooklyn, NY. A story about the recreation center's history was also featured in Brownstoner.

Although membership is required for use of the pool, there are a number of free activites for both kids and adults.

St. John's Recreation Center offers after school programs, computer labs and free tennis lessons. Afterschool programs, including computer labs, are held Monday-Friday until 6 p.m. Free tennis lessons are offered on Saturday mornings.

Millennium Basketball League is a free basketball league and tournament for kids. The league is open to boys (ages 8-16) and girls (ages 8-13) at participating recreation centers at St. John's as well as Brownsville Red Hook.

Both "Shape Up NYC Body Conditioning" and Shape Up NYC Cardio Sculpt classes are held at the St. John's Recreation Center. The classes are free, and for participants of all ages.
