The first thing you need to know about the Comroll Travel Pillow is that it’s big—really, really big. But if that doesn’t scare you off, the myriad of ways you can use this versatile travel pillow makes up for its bulky size. If you’re a fidgety sleeper looking for a comfortable support pillow, this might be a good choice for you.

This pillow packs down (way down), but there are a few things you’ll want to take into account before stowing it in your carry-on. I tested this pillow to evaluate everything from how it inflates to where it stacks up against the competition.

Design: Inflates easily with clever valve design

This travel pillow is designed to offer some unique sleeping position options, but the first step is to get it inflated—which can be a little confusing if you’re not following the instructions.

The Comroll pillow comes with a nifty little inflation valve, but it’s easy to miss the point of it. There are actually two valve covers stacked on top of each other. Completely removing both will let all the air out, but opening just the top valve allows you to blow air in without it escaping. I was able to get the entire pillow inflated in fewer than ten deep breaths.

At first glance, the inflated Comroll pillow looks a bit like an inflated life jacket—but it’s only here to preserve your shut-eye time. The non-slip square base makes it easy to position the pillow securely on your tray table. Then, just lean forward, loop your arms through the center of the pillow, and rest your face in the soft-lined opening.

Right out of the bag, it comes with a strong smell and considering you’re going to spend a lot of time with your face up against this pillow, you’ll want to give it proper time to air out.

Be aware that when inflated, this pillow takes up a ton of space—it measures 14.6 x 13.8 x 20.1 inches. The size shouldn’t be taken lightly—it’s so big, you won’t have room to watch movies or put a drink on your tray. I could easily see this pillow creeping into your seatmate’s space if you’re not careful.

Portability: Slim when deflated

I was surprised to see how much smaller this pillow got once I deflated it to put it away. At 3.9 x 5.9 inches, it should fit easily into a tote bag or a backpack. However, once you have it inflated, don’t plan on going far. Fortunately, it inflates and deflates quickly, earning it high marks for portability.

Comfort: Multiple sleeping positions are possible

There are four different ways you can use the Comroll pillow: face-first into the top hole, against your chest with your arms crossed in the two side holes, with one arm looped through the side hole, or hugged against your chest with your arms wrapped around the pillow. I thought the most comfortable position was face-first into the top of the pillow with my arms looped through the side holes.

One thing to note is that this pillow does require a day or so of off-gassing. Right out of the bag, it comes with a strong smell, and considering you’re going to spend a lot of time with your face up against this pillow, you’ll want to give it proper time to air out.

Durability: Waterproof is a plus

The Comroll Travel Pillow is a go-anywhere type of pillow and, fortunately, it’s waterproof. With a pillow of this size, knocking into your seatmate’s drink is a very real possibility. At least you can brush off the liquid and snooze on.

This pillow is also machine washable and easy to spot clean.

Price: (Really) Big bang for your buck

No doubt about it, this is a mega-sized travel pillow for the price. It’s a very affordable option for sleepers who move around a lot and want multiple options to rest their head. But if you’re looking for something less intrusive, you can find much better options for the same price, or a little higher.

Competition: Unique for its size and versatility

Out of the five travel pillows that I tested, this one was the biggest with the most sleeping positions. One other competitor with a similar design is the Ostrich Travel Pillow, but it's six times more expensive and requires you to stick your entire head in it. If you thought you’d get some strange looks using the Comroll pillow, the Ostrich pillow will definitely raise eyebrows—not that you’ll care, since you won’t be able to see anyone anyway.

But, overall, we found that the Comroll pillow offers more sleeping positions with the added work of inflating it yourself and letting it air out for the first few days. When compared to more traditional travel pillows, the Comroll doesn’t have higher-end features like a plush cover or memory foam core.
