Cleveland County Fair
Sept. 29 to Oct. 9, 2016
1751 E. Marion St.
Shelby, N.C. 28152
The Cleveland County Fair is held in Shelby, NC and has become the largest agricultural state fair in the state. You'll find plenty of animal and agricultural exhibits, along with the rides, food, music, entertainment, and everything else you'd usually associate with a "county fair."
In 1923, the Shelby Kiwanis planned a county fair that would combine several smaller fairs into one big event.
Shares of stock were sold at $20, and $15,000 was raised in total to begin the Cleveland County Fair. 46 acres of land were set aside (now Cleveland Community College), and the fair officially opened in 1924 with about 70,000 people in attendance. Attendance has gradually grown to point that the Cleveland County fair is now the largest county fair in the state of North Carolina, with close to 200,000 people attending each year.
