Whether you celebrate Christmas or Hanukah or you just delight in the holidays, there are plenty of festive occasions to bring some sparkling lights into your winter days. Here are some places in Nassau and Suffolk Counties where you can watch Christmas trees and menorahs lit up in all their splendor.

    The Holtsville Ecology Center, 249 Buckley Road, Holtsville, NY, presents a Christmas Tree Lighting at 6 p.m. Santa will arrive by helicopter!

    The Annual Christmas Tree Lighting in the Vanderbilt Mansion Courtyard. This FREE event is open to the public. It begins at 4 p.m. with the Northport Chorale performing Christmas carols and holiday favorites, follwed by a 4:30 p.m. lighting of the tree and the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Cookies and hot chocolate will be served. Note: all who attend may pick up complimentary tickets to the Chorale's concert on Friday, December 12, 2014 at 8 p.m. at Northport High School.

    Smith Haven Mall Tree Lighting Event from 4 to 6 p.m. The mall will illuminate a 30-foot tree with thousands of twinkling lights. As part of the program, families will be treated to live entertainment from carolers and costumed characters, Santa will make an appearance, there will be face painting, giveaways and more. Guests will also receive FREE hot chocolate, coffee and samples from Smith Haven Mall eateries.

    Smith Haven Mall is located at Routes 347 and 25 in Lake Grove, New York.

    Belmont Lake State Park Tree Lighting Festivities start at 4:15 p.m., and the tree will be lit around 5 p.m. There will be holiday music, ice sculpting demo, and a fireworks display. Santa will arrive on the Long Island Sleigh Express. Everyone is welcome to this celebration.

    Update: Sorry...this popular event is sold out. Old Westbury Gardens will host its annual First Night and Tree Lighting from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., with the mansion decked out in holiday splendor. Tree lighting, cookies and cider served, performance by the Bethel Concert Choice, and of course, a visit from Santa.

    General Admission: $10.00 adults, $5.00 children (2 to 12 years). Members: $5.00 adults, members' children: free. Due to limited space, reservations are required.

    For the 11th consecutive year, the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County present the largest light show on Long Island: their annual Holiday Light Show at 600 Lakeview Avenue in Bayport, New York, open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. each night.

    Drive through a lovely, mile-long wooded trail surrounded by dazzling light displays and holiday vignettes. There are new displays every year. Cost: $15 per car from Monday through Thursday, $20 per car from Friday through Sunday. Note: you MUST buy tickets in advance.

    FREE admission and FREE activities. NO parking fee.The 10th Annual Tree Lighting and Visit from Santa at Coe Hall Mansion and Planting Fields Arboretum, 1395 Planting Fields Road, Oyster Bay, NY. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The tree will be lit at 6 p.m. sharp. Coe Hall Mansion will be decorated for the season, and you can take a self-guided visit. Kids can visit with Santa until 7:30 pl.m. in the Hay Barn.
